[Murray] It's been a while since I used it but Memento on iOS was a little bit like this, I think ... it pulled in all your timelines but tried to meld it into a single view of your day
#
[scojjac]
I wonder if it might help conceptually - though it sounds like you know what you want
#
[Murray]
scojjac++ thanks, this looks really interesting! (and I wouldn't say I know what I want, more I know what I don't want, that's the problem 😄)
#
Loqi
scojjac has 1 karma over the last year
#
[scojjac]
ha I know that problem too well
#
[Murray]
I mean... in terms of a UI I'd actually happily ditch my site for a _lot_ of this stuff and just use Momento, this feels ideal for my use-case in terms of data capture... why isn't it on Android 😭
#
[Murray]
but definitely some interesting takeaways from even a quick scan over 🙂

GWG
Good morning
#
[cjw6k]
hi GWG!
#
[cjw6k]
I'm hoping to join a meetup soon. These are probably all virtual now, zoom or similar?
#
GWG
[cjw6k]: Right now yes
#
GWG
And what timezone are you on?
#
[cjw6k]
Atlantic
#
[cjw6k]
oh my, I seem to be in between the Europe and West Coast HWCs @ events.indieweb.org
#
GWG
We have a combined Americas event
#
GWG
6pm Pacific, 9pm Eastern, 10pm Atlantic
#
[cjw6k]
super, I hope I can make it
#
GWG
We've been doing it weekly
#
GWG
And we love more people

what is archive?
#
Loqi
archive in the context of the indieweb refers to date-grouped (often monthly) sets of posts (AKA personal historical archives, a common form of temporal navigation), but can sometimes mean archival copy, a copy of a web page made (often by someone other than the author) at a particular point in time https://indieweb.org/archive
#
[cjw6k]
I would say I have been curating and authoring, as opposed to crafting lately. Have switched into using the tools I have made as opposed to focusing on the tools themselves.
#
[cjw6k]
lately I have been thinking about webmentions, and how I might add sending webmentions into my site. I think it's good to get the big picture here - communicating with people! Making some connections -with the technology piece in there too.
#
GWG
I have been doing a combination of making tools and creating content
#
[tantek]
^ [Murray] that /archive page probably interests you as well, see the examples and the subsequent brainstorming sections (and their links) https://indieweb.org/archive#IndieWeb_Examples

Saw some of those GWG. I ❤ microsub. I have been turning over ideas about play as post, or post as play, ymmv. Something like playing a card with each post, centralized score-keeper notified via micropub, and having a slow-rolling game of whist or similar.

anyone have an explanation for what's going on in the replies to this tweet? seriously: https://twitter.com/t/status/1351942564732026880
#
[tantek]
anyway, anyone looking for an example of "weird" webmention noise, there's one for you. none of it is technically spam, though none of it adds anything to the original post (just noise)
#
[tantek]
they're also awful for UI/presentation
#
[tantek]
but this is my point, "fighting spam" isn't the only problem
#
[cjw6k]
oh - yea, that UI effect is not good
#
[cjw6k]
it's akin to the idem in footnotes
#
[cjw6k]
more or less 🤷‍♂️

this is somewhat interesting - is the common thread of these new apps adding a ritual to them? https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/23/22296520/social-networks-competition-facebook-tiktok-twitter-clubhouse-snap

I mean that they are adding a ritual both as friction to bypass to make you feel invested, and as a way to encourage use.

[KevinMarks] is the ritual friction you're referring to the "invite-only" aspect?

also the photos come at 9am in the other app

is there an animation at 08:59 of them slowly coming out of a machine into "drop"?

What is Clubhouse?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Clubhouse" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Clubhouse is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
petermolnar
Clubhouse is voice only IRC.
#
petermolnar
(existential question: if Clubhouse is deemed a social network, is IRC (and any derivatives of it) is also a social network?)
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
or is clubhouse a protocol?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
cause isn't that what IRC is?
[chrisaldrich] joined the channel
#
[chrisaldrich]
people interacting in a space or on a common platform is a social network. the commonality of how the code works and allows plurality makes it a protocol. clubhouse is just a silo since there is no agreed upon open protocol to interact with it.
#
[chrisaldrich]
maybe we need a venn diagram of this?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
no problem here with the venn idea
[fluffy] joined the channel
#
aaronpk
"IRC" refers to both the protocol as well as an individual network too
#
[tantek]
lol voice only IRC would be a huge upgrade from what Clubhouse is today (a silo)
#
[tantek]
Clubhouse << silo
#
Loqi
ok, I added "[[silo]]" to a brand new "See Also" section of /Clubhouse https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=74733&oldid=74732
#
[scojjac]
[petermolnar_] this question reminded me of how people often refer to WhatsApp as a social media app, which I never considered it to be—I suppose it does have social features but it was a messaging app, which I think of as more private.
#
[chrisaldrich]
aren't the vast majority of our social interactions generally private (between two people)?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
interesting thought...what defines something as a social media site? ability to add someone as a friend? ability to follow?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
something else?
#
[chrisaldrich]
it's really only since the beginning of social media online that we're living more of our lives in the proverbial town square.

the internet was supposed to give voice to everyone, now we're wondering if we actually wanted that
#
[chrisaldrich]
it's nice to have a voice, but you also need to be kind enough to spend some time listening...
