Perhaps its already hiding in the scrollback, but definitely worth another ping here: https://interconnected.org/home/2021/03/22/social_attention Matt Webb has built an interesting and subtle bit of social interaction into his website that is incredibly cool and very IndieWeb in spirit.
#
[chrisaldrich]
ping[KevinMarks] ^^ who is sure to appreciate it for potential extension of fragmentions and social interaction.
#
[chrisaldrich]
what is annotation?
#
Loqi
Annotations are comments (including marginalia), highlights or any other interactions that add to (part of) a post, typically added by individuals other than the author https://indieweb.org/annotation
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://interconnected.org/home/2021/03/22/social_attention" to the "See Also" section of /annotation https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=75076&oldid=74391

#

It looks like we don't have a page for "streak" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "streak is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[chrisaldrich]
He's also got a snippet on the bottom of his post that indicates a streak of how many consecutive weeks he's posted (presumably an article).
#
[chrisaldrich]
WordPress.com has a mobile functionality (also in Jetpack if I recall) that will send you phone notifications that you have a streak of X days.

That was a fun little Tom Critchlow joint with his partner which came out in the last year. Fun little thing, though it does require their script to run.

besides the concept of a blogroll, what sort of discovery-based things could one add to their website in 2021? I also just updated my OPML but that doesn't necessarily help me easily find others just yet.
#
KartikPrabhu
what is discovery?
#
Loqi
Discovery is a variety of methods for finding content, websites, communities, or people to follow on the web including search, directories, recommendation engines, tags, or other serendipitous methods https://indieweb.org/discovery
#
[tantek]
I'd say OPML is a essentially a #indieweb-dev thing these days, since there's no real good UI for visual editing etc. When you're talking about a format rather than a feature, that's a strong hint that it's a dev thing.
#
Loqi
hey [tw2113_Slack_], [tantek], it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical, can you take it to #indieweb-dev?
#
[tantek]
nailed it πŸ‘Š
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
πŸ˜›
#
KartikPrabhu
well I escaped a Loqi lashing
#
[tantek]
tw2113, I'd say the best thing for discovery is still publishing relevant, well-written blog posts with short shareable permalinks with good slugs
#
[tantek]
KarthikPrabhu you deftly avoided mentioning anything dev-specific πŸ™‚

and no at grocery store whole beans
#
sknebel
[tw2113_Slack_]: I think for discovery we are very much in the stage of "whatever you think of, please try it out, we'd love to hear about it!"
#
sknebel
as in, a few ideas, not enough experience, but everyone agrees it'd be great to have better answers for
#
[tantek]
We may need to have a more user-centric discussion of what does discovery actually mean to people from a feature perspective. There seem to be very different perspectives
#
[tantek]
E.g. there's at least two separate questions:
#
[tantek]
How do I discover "interesting [to me]" content to read, listen to, watch?
#
[tantek]
How do I publish my content so folks interested in it can more easily discover it?
#
[tantek]
tw2113, your first question ("could one add to their website in 2021?") seemed to be asking the second question, whereas your second statement ("help me easily find others") seems to be asking the first question. They are different (though related) problems
#
sknebel
maybe "how can I highlight people who I think produce exceptionally good content (about topic X)?"
#
sknebel
highlight isn't the right word
#
[tantek]
sknebel I like that: Maybe something like: How can I help this content (or person) I found be more easily discoverable for others who may be interested in it (them) as well?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
crisis averted, coffee acquired
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
hmm
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
probably one problem i have is that seems like large majority of sites now are in some way business driving or focused, and I'm still re-dreaming of the days of personal sites
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
here's an interesting good question. How do personal websites and SEO work together. Besides obvious things like putting yourself high in rankings.
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
based on what?

#
[tantek]
what do you mean by "putting yourself high in rankings"?
#
[tantek]
what is SEO
#
Loqi
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization which refers to the practice and results of publishing pages and permalinks on the web in order to rank better (earlier/higher) in web search engine results https://indieweb.org/seo
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
for search results, but my question moves to for what? your own name? some random topic that you sort of talk about on your personal site?
#
[tantek]
still not clear what your goals are or what actual questions you're trying to answer
#
[tantek]
if you're asking about publishing, I braindumped a bit here: https://indieweb.org/SEO#Publish_Good_Content_At_Simple_Permalinks
#
[tantek]
are your questions covered by any of these? https://indieweb.org/discovery#Questions_to_consider or do we need to add more questions?

what does it mean to be search engine optimized with a website that is not trying to drive business, sales, or representing yourself as an expert or someone intently discussing Topic X
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
perhaps a spot left long ago when people didn't visit sites just for the hell of it because there's not much else available to check out?
#
KartikPrabhu
does a personal website which isn't driving buisness need to be SEO optimized for engines which only care about clicks and business stuff?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
that's my current conclusion, but still collecting opinions/thoughts from the masses

[tw2113_Slack_] i think the main question is who do you want to find your site, and why (if at all) would a search engine be a good way for them to do that?
#

i can definitely see those bits playing into this
#
[tw2113_Slack_]

[tantek]
keep asking questions yes, and questioning assumptions
#
[tantek]
e.g. why do you care about even framing *anything* as "SEO"?

utility of advice is inversely proportional to the occurence(s) of keywords "dude", "just", "like", and "lmao"
