Hi! I am *very* new indieweb. I'm trying to get set up on the wiki, but I think I might not know enough to be here. I have such basic questions and I'm finding I don't really understand the wiki pages that answer them.
#
christin
Ok, I just got on the wiki this morning by adding the IndieAuth plugin to my wordpress blog. The wiki my username appears to be "Christinwixson.com author admin" which seems not ideal. How would I fix that?
#
GWG
christin: There's a setting in the plugin to allow you to let a user use the root domain
#
GWG
Without it it uses the author url, assuming you are the admin user
#
Zegnat
Good morning IndieWeb!

[jeremycherfas]
Good morning zegnat

This is where it gets embarrassing. In my wp admin (yes I'm the admin) I see a list of plugins, but I don't know what the phrase "in the plugin" means. They don't seem to be clickable. There's a "view details" link but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do there.
#
christin
I'm sorry. I know just enough to have a wordpress blog on a domain I got through DoOO. I'm a librarian with no coding or web developer background.
#
GWG
christin: We have a dedicated WordPress room for help as well. But under Indieweb then IndieAuth. If you don't have the Indieweb plugin installed, IndieAuth will be under settings
#
GWG
Morning, Zegnat, [jeremycherfas] Joining us for the session later?
#
GWG
christin: What is your site?
#
GWG
Nevermind, I see it in the scroll
#
christin
Settings!! Awesome, I wasn't looking there, I was just looking under Plugins. Thank you!

Anything we can do to help
#
christin
I think I found the setting you were referring to. Now my username appears as "Christinwixson.com" which is much better. Is there anyway to loose the ".com"?
#
GWG
You logged in with your domain...so that is your identity to the system.
#
GWG
The wiki shows the domain, equivalent of the user id, I don't think it's implemented a display name option
#
christin
Well I'll take it. Thanks so much for your help!
#
GWG
christin: If you are free Wednesday, we get together online every week

That sounds great! I'm also really interested in the Gardens and Streams event. I started playing with TiddlyWiki in March and it's completely changed the way I work.
#
GWG
The last one was very well attended
#
Zegnat
GWG: I am hoping to attend tonight. I am leaving on a vacation abroad tomorrow though and currently packing, so just need to see how it turns out time wise.
#
GWG
Okay.

heads up all, I'm starting to roll out a big Bridgy codebase overhaul. There shouldn't be many user visible changes, but please let me know if you see anything wrong over the next few days!

christin++ For getting a username on the wiki set up. Welcome! Great to have another DoOO/OER/TiddlyWiki person here, much less a librarian from PSU!?! Do let us know if you have more questions.

What would it take to make the wiki use a profile scope to show nicer user names instead of domains?
#
aaronpk
The domain is the canonical username, it would be chaos if it allowed you to set arbitrary non-domain usernames as your wiki account
#
Rattroupe
christin's remarks earlier echoed a suspicion of mine that domains really aren't usernames
#
Rattroupe
I kind of waned to bring up that topic at the popup but thought it might be too disruptive
#
[fluffy]
Yeah, this has been an ongoing concern of mine as well. I’m grateful that people were at least receptive to accepting the IndieAuth spec change that improved the authority requirements for multiple user pages on a single domain, at least.
#
[fluffy]
That was the intention behind https://github.com/indieweb/indieauth/pull/53 in any case.

#
[fluffy]
@rattroupe BTW I didn’t see that you’d added specific support for profile scope. What fields did you end up settling on for the profile? I’ve been wanting to add that into Authl but I haven’t had anything that provides a profile to parse yet.
#
