[tantek]
considering the specific use-case I have of migrating my PBwiki "topic" pages to my own site, I'm not even sure how many of the revisions are "relevant" to migrate vs "just" the current content, and some of the pages I'm not even sure I would bother to put "top level" on my site either
#
[tantek]
some of the revisions are perhaps historically interesting to me, but I'd doubt they'd be interesting (much if at all) to anyone else
#
[snarfed]
ideally you'd keep them, since losing data is always sad, and you often regret it later, but you'd choose separately whether/which to expose to readers
#
[tantek]
I'm not sure, it's like I don't miss not having full keystroke history of my posts
#
[tantek]
(Etherpad style)
#
[tantek]
there's perhaps a "historical" interest aspect of "what did this page look like in this year"
#
[tantek]
so maybe I'd keep year granularity of revisions for that reason?
#
[tantek]
not sure, will have to look at the specific pages / content to see how much it matters to me
#
[tantek]
and yes, the difference between internal revisions, and "anyone browsable" revisions is a good distinction
#
[snarfed]
sure, but there's a big difference between keystroke history and no history
#
[snarfed]
oops, sorry, hadn't seen most of those msgs yet, disregard

capjamesg[d]: we try to keep jargon (Micropub, Microsub) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?

Loqi
[capjamesg] microsub: A Microsub server built with Python Flask and SQLite.
#
capjamesg[d]
Sorry Loqi. Typo 😦
#
capjamesg[d]
It's still in development but working good for me. I'm using Monocle for the client. It's a terrific client.

Capjames - have a look at etag/last modified for your polling. Feedparser explains it well https://pythonhosted.org/feedparser/http-etag.html
#
capjamesg[d]
[KevinMarks] That looks interesting.
#
capjamesg[d]
Right now I retrieve feeds and only add new entries into the DB.
#
capjamesg[d]
But that requires checking if each post in a feed is in the DB, adding time to the polling process.
#
[KevinMarks]
Right, this will save you parsing the feed and comparing.
#
capjamesg[d]
+1 I'm going to implement this at some point. Good suggestion!

friendly reminder [KevinMarks] capjamesg[d], we try to keep jargon (ETag, implement) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
[KevinMarks]
Works at the http level, so works for all feed types. Feedparser builds it in, but you can do the same with request
#
capjamesg[d]
Moving to #dev.

@radioacademy
Dear @shaunwkeaveny. Thank you! For the last 15 years, yes. But also, for these last 2.5 mins of gospel truth about what makes a radio show WAY more than just a radio show. #onions https://twitter.com/radioacademy/status/1436398140941295616/video/1

Allie
hiya folks! i have a weird requirement with a work thing and i figure some of y'all might have an Idea:
#
Allie
we need to be able throw together quick, lazy branded webpages to be embedded as iframes in a virtual event platform
#
Allie
right now we're building static pages and throwing them at our CDN, which is fine, but i wonder if some static site generation (or, hell, some tiny CMS) would be more appropriate
#
Loqi
Allie: can you move the tech talk (embedded, iframes, CDN) to #indieweb-dev to keep this channel more inclusive and inviting?
#
Allie
Loqi: ah, okay! that's not signposted anywhere, wasn't aware
#
vilhalmer
Loqi is the signpost :)

benchi[m]
bit of a random question for people:
#
benchi[m]
mail@[your-name].com, contact@[your-name].com, root@[your-name].com?
#
benchi[m]
what do you like to use for the prefix of your primary email address when you've got [your-name].com?
#
benchi[m]
Is there some convention that people prefer?
#
capjamesg[d]
benchi[m] I am using jamesg@jamesg.blog. But my full name is not in my domain so I'm not really answering your question 😆
#
aaronpk
i used to use first @ firstlast .com but I didn't really like it
#
capjamesg[d]
I like memorable emails benchi[m].
#
capjamesg[d]
I have seen me@yourname.com in the past.
#
aaronpk
now i use first @ last .com even tho i don't have a website at that domain
#
benchi[m]
hah, Aaron, I was literally just looking at your site to see how you did it
#
capjamesg[d]
Or hello@yourname.com
#
benchi[m]
ohh, did you make a deal with the domain owner or something?
#
benchi[m]
hmm, "me" or "hello" are nice.
#
aaronpk
i registered my last name a couple years after i got my full name
#
benchi[m]
Part of me really wants to go with "root" for the classic cryptonomicon vibes, but I can see trying to actually set that up securely being a nightmare haha
#
benchi[m]
aaronpk: oh right. Yeah, if I had my last name that's totally what I would do. Unfortunately I have a rather common last name, so not likely it's ever going to become available
#
aaronpk
easy fix: change your name :)

capjamesg[d] not sure if you're aware, but I've received a few webmentions from your /likes/ page - may end up being like https://www.jvt.me/posts/2019/10/30/reader-mail-webmention-spam/ after some time
#
capjamesg[d]
jamietanna That's good to know. Very odd.
#
capjamesg[d]
How many have you received?
#
capjamesg[d]
I'm using webmention.app to send webmentions integrated with Netlify.
#
capjamesg[d]
So I'll need to investigate and potentially email the creator.
#
capjamesg[d]
Unless it's me messing up 😄
#
capjamesg[d]
I have disabled this feature for now.

I just ran across the phrase "digital sabbath" which is an interesting cultural framing for taking time away from screens and social media. Curious if anyone has seen other neologisms that mean anything similar? Social media fasting, etc...
