Has anyone used IFTTT to post to Mastodon? I feel like it should be able to work using the webhooks/web request, but I keep getting errors (with of course very little info because IFTTT). I am trying to create something that will post each time I add a new item to reading.am (in case there’s a better way 🙂

I do it indirectly. I post to Twitter via IFTTT and then use a mastodon twitter cross poster.
#
[fluffy]
That's how it gets to indieweb.social anyway.
#
[fluffy]
On plush.city I use a mastodon posting bot thing I found, which runs on git commit hook for my site.

<person> Thanks [tantek]!
#
[tantek]
[fluffy] I was considering that but I'd rather not depend on Twitter to POSSE to Mastodon
#
[fluffy]
yeah that’s totally fair, I only do it that way because I was crossposting twitter to mastodon anyway

<person> One question I have for you specifically [chrisaldrich] is how your site is so...cohesive? It looks like everything you post and all comments on everything you post anywhere are on your site? Do you have a post about how you set all of that up?
#
[tantek]
[chrisaldrich] has a magical WordPress setup

This is what I use for my feed->Mastodon POSSE on plush.city: https://feed2toot.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

<person> [tantek] ah, I see. Yeah, it looks very magical. Ooh I like this feed to toot option [fluffy]. Looks super interesting

person, it feels magical, but is really mostly small pieces loosely joined. I've documented portions in various posts across my site, many bundled together in this collection: https://boffosocko.com/research/indieweb/
#
[chrisaldrich]
Lots of other pieces are documented across the IndieWeb wiki fairly well. You can browse through this mostly comprehensive list to see where I'm mentioned on wiki pages: https://indieweb.org/User:Boffosocko.com#Backlinks

[Kelson] How to Post to Mastodon From Anything Using IFTTT
#
[chrisaldrich]
I'm currently using a PESOS workflow to take posts from reading.am to post to my website using this method: https://boffosocko.com/2020/01/21/using-ifttt-to-syndicate-pesos-content-from-social-services-to-wordpress-using-micropub/, then when publishing I optionally syndicate to various places primarily using brid.gy.

Thanks all! [chrisaldrich] I am already following your lead (not sure you still do it this way) and having IFTTT create a draft WP post when I add something new. However, I don’t want to publish on my site at that point (prefer to do that when I’m done), but I do want to send out notifications I have started something.
#
[Chris_Lott]
But even as I explain that I am starting to think maybe I don’t want to separate those two things 🙂

[Chris_Lott] when thinking about automating things, it often helps to try them out manually for a bit to see how it feels or what might be useful to change to better perfect your process.
#
chrisaldrich
what is manual until it hurts?
#
Loqi
manual until it hurts is an indieweb principle of resisting automation until you have done it enough times to really understand it, and know that it is worth doing https://indieweb.org/manual_until_it_hurts

[chrisaldrich] That makes sense, and is kind of how I proceed with “productivity” improvements…fix where there’s the most, or most important, friction and/or where the solution is easy or with high ROI. That said, the future value can be hard to predict. In this case, sharing what I am currently reading can have certain network effects I like in offboard systems, but just feels like confusing clutter in my site!

When purchasing domains what do you find to be more cost effective: longer term contracts or shorter term contracts?
#
russbain
For example: namecheap is telling me $11.50 per year for two years or $17.50 per year for ten years
#
russbain
But I don't know the renewal rate after two years
#
[tantek]
that is odd. which TLD?
#
aaronpk
i think that's saying $17.50 each year for 10 years
#
aaronpk
some of them do deals on the first 1 or 2 years but for some reason the system doesn't apply that to longer term registrations
#
aaronpk
oh you said per year already, i missed that when i read it the first time :)
#
aaronpk
do the discount price and then buy the additional years after :)
#
[tantek]
as two separate transactions, yeah. or wait two years for another discount. they're not really incentivizing pre-paying for 10 years in advance, so don't (unless you're worried about forgetting?)
#
aaronpk
i've also never seen deals for renewals, but sometimes i've seen deals for transferring to a new registrar
#
[tantek]
I've seen multiyear deals where the more years you buy, the less the per year cost (up to something like 5-10 years, then it stops getting cheaper)
#
russbain
I was leaning toward the 2 year deal. Just didn't know if they have a snafu built in for renewals.

I feel like manual till it hurts is similar to Adam Savage's rule of "the first time you buy a tool, buy the cheapest one. When that breaks then you buy the most expensive one cause then you know you use it lots."
#

Also, got Articles with nice slug URLs working in microblog.pub so now it works better for the portfolio part of my site
