[hollie] back in 2007 this was suggested, which is along the lines of what I firs thought reading your question. http://shardsofconsciousness.com/how-to-show-titles-only-on-a-wordpress-archive-page i.e. in the archive template make a few edits that show the linked title (and perhaps number of responses)
#
[tonz]
That’s for WP 2.2., so ancient, and no blocks

Also, if you definitely don’t want blocks, there is ClassicPress as an alternative.

When I was contacting WordPress support for my WordPress.com account a few months ago, the person was trying to fix my theme problem with blocks and I asked whether I could just not use them. I said there’d been a plug-in in my self-installed site that removed blocks. He said that all of WordPress would soon be “only blocks,” that eventually all the old non-block themes wouldn’t work. I admit I don’t understand enough about how
#
[hollie]
built to know whether he really meant “eventually every WP user in the world will need to use blocks,” but it kinda sounded like that?
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
I doubt it’ll happen THAT soon, but I could easily believe they want that 5-10+ years from now
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
in terms of WordPress.com itself, they have greater control over that, as opposed to self hosted with WordPress the software application

what is classicpress
#
Loqi
ClassicPress is a community fork of WordPress that emerged due to resistance to the introduction of the Gutenberg visual editor https://indieweb.org/ClassicPress
#
GWG
Who wrote resistance? That sounds like it was a bad thing
#
gRegor
[hollie], I don't have experience using that^ but it might be of interest to you. WordPress core will eventually be block-editor only, just a matter of time.

Wordpress did commit 1000 percent to Guttenberg, and pretty much they went all in. Suspect things like ClassicPress will be fleeting and if you don't like Blocks, you just have to go use Drupal or other CMS's...

enabling comments means that you get to moderate them, so it is adding work for you
#
[hollie]
I like the way that you can comments to work with IndieWeb though, which I haven't figured out how to do yet. : ) How one person can reply on their site, and it shows up on yours. That's just so cool IMO.
#
sebbu
[KevinMarks], that's why i have akismet configured
#
[schmarty]
hollie: it's definitely cool to leave comments aside! especially as you are deciding early on what your site should be for you.

ah, that's webmention, and it is lovely when you have it working but does take some setup
#
gRegor
I think on your previous site we had webmention mostly working, but some display issues with the WordPress theme. That's still a pain point, showing comments nicely in different themes.

[hollie]
Is webmention something that will only work with certain themes? (I'm thinking something that would work on ClassicPress here). Are there other blogging formats on which it works? Like Jekyll or Hugo?
#
barnaby
webmention is the underlying mechanism which one site uses to tell another site “hey, I have a page which links to one of your pages”
#
barnaby
afaik on wordpress, webmention is implemented by a plugin which you install
#
[hollie]
Ahh, okay - so I've read stuff about how some themes "work with IndieWeb" and others don't - but it's just a plug-in so any theme would work theoretically?
#
barnaby
and I’d imagine it hooks into wordpress’s existing comment presentation, and would likely need tweaking on a theme-by-theme basis to get it working properly?
#
barnaby
but I’m not the local wordpress expert
#
[schmarty]
GWG can explain in more detail, but webmention has several parts that all need to work together for success.
#
GWG
Hooks in yes, but tries to do so with as little friction as possible
#
barnaby
[hollie]: I think some themes “working with indieweb” is mostly about how easy it is to inject microformats classnames into the themes. microformats markup is how sites take a page and figure out which text is the post title, post content, etc
#
GWG
Parts which we've rewritten in the continually stslled v5
#
barnaby
and there are ways of automating some of that markup, but not all of it
#
Loqi
hey barnaby: can you move the tech talk (markup, Microformats) to #indieweb-dev to keep this channel more inclusive and inviting?
#
barnaby
ha ha yes this is probably more of a dev topic now
#
[schmarty]
haha, got 'em! thank you Loqi 😄

Hey everyone: not asking for anyone here to help with this, but would appreciate if there were venues you could think about sharing it. Folks here know that I run this instance focused on evangelizing #indieweb tech to the Mastadon and Activitypub social space, and finding ways they and the Indieweb tech space can cooperate. The instance is now one of the top 5 tech instances on Mastodon with just over 4.7 million local users,
#
[timothy_chambe]
and new activity pubub and self-hosted social efforts like Bonfire and GoToSocial have chosen it as their main instance.
#
[timothy_chambe]
My managed manstodon host just informed me that they are increasing the hosting cost 5x, and given the size of the instance, that is not unreasonable. But I am trying to get he word out for those who care about that as community to continue existing, that it would need additional donors. I don't mind running this at a loss, but it can't be THAT much of a loss.
#
Loqi
[Tim Chambers] Hi Everyone: I just learned that the server costs for this instance will (and I should say not unreasonably given its size) go up substantially to me.Server costs going up 5X shortly. We are one of the larger tech instances on the fedi. This is a lab...

[timothy_chambe] you have 4.7M users?!? really? that's...surprising, and amazing. congrats! how many are active?
#
[snarfed]
https://indieweb.social/about/more says 4.7K instead, which sounds maybe more likely? typo?

sounds good! if you can copy/paste neopets HTML, you can make a personal site ;)

Unfortunately longer messages on Discord do get cut off in IRC, that first one cut off at "which does"

do you have a domain already?

but will soon), and either implementing POSSE to other social media, or at the very least, embedding feeds and links to other places. Is the Getting Started page on the wiki pretty much still up to date? Also, I could have sworn that I found a tool for doing POSSE once made by an IndieWeb Person, but I can't find it anymore, lol. If anyone has any recommendations for that, that'd be great

@barnaby No, I do not have a domain yet. It may take me a few days to come up with one... lol

thanks! yep, bridgy is a great tool for getting POSSE working

mouse1: it’s a difficult decision. I’m still stuck with the rather silly domain I bought in my early teens xD
