[snarfed] the other important distinction is opposition to _user features_ based on global indexing, eg global search, vs opposition to _any global indexing_, even for wholly private purposes. it seems like the fediverse has mostly focused on the latter, which is arguably more cultural/UX than purely technical, and makes sense to me
