starrwulfe[m] As one of the original beta users of Instagram all the way back when I had an iPhone 3GS, I cannot tell you how saddened I am of it’s metamorphosis into “Other TikTok/Snapchat”. But it’s not surprising at all.
# starrwulfe[m] One of my various sidegigs once upon a time was working with Instagram's original founders just after they sold to Facebook as a Japanese localization consultant.. They were looking to translate the app in a hurry as Instagram was a success in Japan even with machine translations in the UI already.
# starrwulfe[m] This meant that I'd get called from time to time to help look over translations whenever new features were added from time to time. Usually it was just filters, but at one point it was blurbs that signaled the end of not having ads in-app was coming.

But a few of my buddies who covered that year's SXSW had test accounts when I was gigging at the Tokyo AP office so I played with it there. I didn't even have an iPhone yet until the following year.

# starrwulfe[m] I vaguely remember there was no way to even view pictures on the web-- it was truly the first "mobile only" social media app. Just one square picture, a caption and a hashtag-- that's it.
# starrwulfe[m] ha, me too! I had an android phone because only one carrier in Japan had iPhones, and I wasn't on it
# starrwulfe[m] gRegor: yep. That was one of the changes they made as a byproduct of making interoperability between FB and IG IIRC
