Can non-technical humans leverage IndieWeb? Couldn't imagine having to teach my G-ma how manage a VPS, learn Git, and a console based text editor.

to2ds none of that is needed! micro.blog is one full featured hosted indieweb solution that's arguably as easy to sign up with and use as Twitter or Facebook
#
aaronpk
i don't even use a console based text editor 😂
#
[snarfed]
Me neither
#
[snarfed]
WordPress is another. More complex, but definitely doesn't need anything you mentioned, and lots of hosted options

and i barely understand git tbh
#
[snarfed]
No one understands git

Not even Linus

I’m running Wordpress and it’s pretty simple. If you can build IKEA furniture, you can run an indieweb capable Wordpress site.

Microblog is the turnkey solution for sure, but Wordpress is the Lego solution

Thank you everyone. My takeaway from this is that there is still hope and Git has a huge learning curve 😄

[aaronpk], [snarfed] Right there with you. Most of my coding time is plagued with resolving my Git boo boos 😄
#
aaronpk
Whenever something goes wrong with git my solution is to nuke it from orbit
#
aaronpk
I don't have time for that nonsense
#
to2ds
[aaronpk] I can relate.
#

oh that is an accurate description of exactly what I do

Thank you for that [Loqi] 😄

I have gotten to the point where (by a small margin) I spend more time confused over the differences between git GUIs than over git itself.
#
e-snail
I've gotten OK at it after spending a year teaching it to my coworker
#
to2ds
[0x3b0b] 🤜🤛
#
[0x3b0b]
Git itself would probably still be ahead if one of my coworkers weren't still using Sourcetree
#
[0x3b0b]
To be clear, I don't think Sourcetree is actually bad, it just happens not to be intuitive to me
#
aynish
I'm suppose I'm part of the lucky few that generally doesn't struggle too much with git haha
#
gRegor
Switching from SourceTree to Sublime Merge a couple years ago was a great decision. So much faster, love the command palette
#
gRegor
That's getting more into -dev though

hahaha, I gave a few talks on git internals at my last job, but I'm no sorcerer haha

Oh shit, GIT by Julia Evans ( which has been ripped off, sad to say) is helpful too. https://jvns.ca/blog/2018/10/27/new-zine--oh-shit--git-/

Well if Git is a problem there's always CVS 😄

My humblest apologies for steering what should have been an IndieWeb convo toward cryptic version control tools.

[tantek][capjamesg] Agreed. This convo kind of devolved into version control, but my main point was using G-ma as an archetype, someone who would love to be IndieWeb but lacks requisite technical skills and has no other choice but to kowtow to social media.
#
[snarfed]
yes! we care deeply about those people too. hence services like micro.blog, which go so far as to build in domain registration and do all the DNS automatically, behind the scenes, so onboarding truly is as easy as traditional social media
#
[snarfed]
but we also know we have to crawl, then walk, then run. more historical background in eg https://indieweb.org/generations
