does anyone keep track of a personal references / mentions in media page? like non-trivial places (e.g. interviews) or media (e.g. books, news) that mention you by name or link to you or say publish a CC photo of yours?
#
[tantek]
curious about examples before I make something up
#
[tantek]
you know how companies have a "as mentioned in the press" page? do any individuals / IndieWeb folks have a page like that?

related: the "index" discussion we had, except instead of an index of mentions of terms/phrases in your blog posts, and index of (presumably prominent/notable) mentions of your name/site in media
#
[tantek]
I have a couple of examples, one, interviews (keeping track at http://tantek.com/w/TantekInterviews — yes I know that's a redundant page name), and another, photos used by / published in media/newspapers: https://flickr.com/photos/tantek/tags/press — and yes I realize both of those are on silos — this is partly why I'm exploring, I'd like to have page for this kind of thing on my own site.
#
aaronpk
oh yeah i have that
#
aaronpk
right now it's focused on podcasts and youtube videos https://aaronparecki.com/appearances
#
aaronpk
oh hm and I also have a "press" tag that is mostly tagging bookmarks of mentions of me in blog posts https://aaronparecki.com/tag/press
#
aaronpk
i think that's closer to what you had in mind
#
GWG
I am trying to remember if I've ever had a need
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, yes, both!
#
[tantek]
I like "appearances" as a catch all
#
[tantek]
events, interviews, others's podcasts & videos, talks at conferences, notable quotes/mentions in press, use of photography in press
#
aaronpk
interesting, I don't include my own presentations at conferences in that list
#
aaronpk
but I suppose it fits, since it's me at someone else's thing
#
[tantek]
no, not your own presentations. the videos that a conference publishes of your talks
#
aaronpk
oh, well i lump those together
#
[tantek]
I think the key factor here is content someone else has published that includes you or something notable you created (like a photo)
#
aaronpk
but yes I generally agree
#
aaronpk
i wonder if i should go through my "press" tag and add it to the "appearances" page
#
[tantek]
I mean sorta? You (can?) have your own pages of events you have spoken at from your perspective, with the full set of resources, your talk, maybe your posts about it before/after etc., *and* any videos/transcripts that the conference published
#
[tantek]
but I still see that as different from the set of "appearances" which is from an external sourced perspective
#
[tantek]
what is appearances
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "appearances" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "appearances is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
appearances is a page on some IndieWeb sites that lists external pages and media that mention or include the author or something they created in some form, by name, image or other likeness, an interview or quotes therefrom, photos or other media by the author perhaps as part of larger piece of content such as a news article.
#
[tantek]
^ how's that aaronpk?
#
[tantek]
appearances << IndieWeb Example: {{aaronpk}}: https://aaronparecki.com/appearances and also https://aaronparecki.com/tag/press
#
[tantek]
appearances << IndieWeb Example: {{t}} has a page of interviews at: http://tantek.com/w/TantekInterviews (redirects to / hosted on [[PBWorks]])
#
Loqi
ok, I added "IndieWeb Example: {{t}} has a page of interviews at: http://tantek.com/w/TantekInterviews (redirects to / hosted on [[PBWorks]])" to the "See Also" section of /appearances https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=88049&oldid=88048
#
[tantek]
appearances << Silo Example: {{t}} has a "press" tag he uses on Flickr to show a list of his Creative Commons licensed photos that have been published in online press articles: https://flickr.com/photos/tantek/tags/press
#

#
[tantek]
figured I'd do the edits transparently here since they were topical. that's all for now (in here)
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, review if this fits your understanding / usage / expectations and GWG, review to see if this explains it well enough for you to assess whether you have (or had) a need or not for such a page (e.g. have you appeared in a podcast published by Chris Aldrich?)
#
[tantek]
!tell aaronpk re: 'wonder if i should go through my "press" tag and add it to the "appearances" page': see braindump of some possible considerations: https://indieweb.org/appearances#How_to_organize — definitely curious which of those you think matter to your own presentation of appearances to your readers and which don't
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

This exploration of "appearances" has been a good reminder that a simpler, plain(ish) text content-first approach is so much more important than overthinking with categories, schemas, formats etc. create a bunch of plain unstyled content with real information first, worry about layout & style later, and formats after those.

I wonder what CMoS says about such appearances, probably a special form of citations / references

Every action being public by default, they'd need to do some sort of E2E work, key management blah blah

<benpate#1129> Is there an IndieWeb way of doing DMs? Or, would some people here be interested in hammering one out?

What are private posts?
#
Loqi
private posts refer to posts or portions of posts which are private to either the author or to a limited audience chosen or previously approved by the author (like close friends), the latter also known as friends-only posts https://indieweb.org/private_posts
