bkil My original comment was not about The Atlantic article failing to mention this (this is indeed technical and belongs in #dev). What I am missing is that they did not speak about events that happened between Twitter and Facebook started to scale up until the community decided in 2008 that we must start to compete with them and give people a choice to own their data.
