Hive web search: I need to switch a small static website from a shared hosting account. I was thinking of changing to Amazon Web Services, but I just looked at Netlify, and it looks pretty easy to set up and connect to GitHub. Any recommendations here? (Also meta: does this question belong here or #dev?)
#

...waits for Loqi to scold me.
#
btrem
And while I'm asking the hive: I'm moving email services, again from a shared hosting service to...? Google gmail professional? Something else?
#
[tantek]
Netlify is quite #dev-like yeah.
#
[tantek]
Only a dev would find anything with GH "easy to setup"
#
[tantek]
[chrisaldrich] first I've heard of that use of typecasting and tbh sounds made-up like it's not actually a thing (either creative writing or someone is trying to make it a thing). How did you come across it in any practical context?
#
btrem
Right. Wasn't sure, since I don't need to know how to set up GH, Just looking for recommendations. I'll ask over in #dev. Thanks for the nudge.
#
[tantek]
Thanks for checking btrem! ๐Ÿ‘
#
btrem
Probably should have checked *before* asking, not at the same time. :-o But np!

tantek, someone mentioned it as a thing in a typewriter forum. I've seen a few independent site verifications including that wiki. I seem to recall something about it in the 00s.
#
[chrisaldrich]
I'm sure it was incredibly niche at the time.

Hi folks, the event "Pop Up: Multi-Lingual Personal Websites" shows up for tomorrow for me on the ICS calendar, but the event page says Oct 14 -- just wanted to check that it's actually Oct 14, right?
#
aaronpk
that's not good, i can take a look in a sec

Thanks!
#
aaronpk
it looks like it was rescheduled from the original date so i'm guessing your calendar is showing the old date for some reason
#
aaronpk
i'll take a look at the ics feed tho
#
capjamesg
Yes, October 14th.
#
yousef
Ah thanks, could be something fishy on my end (I have it as an "other calendar" on Google Calendar)
#
capjamesg
Apologies for the confusion yousef.
#
[KevinMarks]
If I curl the ics feed I see the correct date, but google calendar is showing the wrong date for me. Did they change their UA? If I open https://events.indieweb.org/ics/events.ics in a browser I get a webpage with a URL to copy - is there conneg magic going on?
#
yousef
It's the same for me (correct date when curl), my hunch is that it's something wrong with GCal updating changes, since when I add the ICS fresh, the events are all in their right place
#
yousef
Np @capjamesg! I think it's GCal
#
yousef
Scratch that -- it looks like a caching issue. When I add the ICS URL to a totally separate (work) GCal, it still has the old dates. When I add it with a question mark at the end, it's the correct dates
#
yousef
(a caching issue on GCal's side, as far as I can tell)
#
sโ€‹isoma
My proton calendar is getting the correct date. Am using the global indieweb events feed.

#
aaronpk
Oof ok I'll have to see if google has any docs about their caching then
#
[KevinMarks]
you're not serving with `etag` so google may be backing off rather than doing a conditional fetch

^ that's another one where Readwise has been super useful. If a newsletter has a feed, I subscribe to that; if they only to email then Readwise gives you an email address that will autoforward any content to your reader ๐Ÿ˜„
#
[tantek]
newsletters are taking off because people have decided to use their email programs as feed readers
[schmarty] joined the channel
#
[schmarty]
i wonder how many folks use email-to-feed features like the one Murray mentioned for Readwise to divert them back to feed readers.

#
[snarfed]
hell, afaik most email newsletter platforms have RSS feeds built in
#
[schmarty]
speaking of feed readers! i've been limping along with Indigenous on my iPhone hoping IndiePass would eventually replace it. i'm thinking of saving Monocle to my home screen, instead, but both have their rough edges. anyone got a social reader they like these days??

Monocle saved to my Home Screen has been working well. Are any of the rough edges small enough I can fix easily?

Iโ€™ve been using NetNewsWire lately on my iOS and macOS. Itโ€™s been around since the 90s but was fully rewritten in 2019
#
cptaffe
It fetches feeds directly, without a backing service. You can use iCloud to sync feeds across devices
#
[schmarty]
aaronpk: i am embarrassed to say that the main thing keeping me from regular monocle use is that it lacks a dark mode ๐Ÿ˜‚
#
aaronpk
bahaha
#
aaronpk
fair enough
#
[schmarty]
but there are some others. sometimes i don't want scrolling to mark things as read (or, actually, i want to see the oldest unread things in a channel)
#
aaronpk
(channel name) -> "Show only unread entries"
#
[schmarty]
(fwiw i use monocle on my laptop setup exclusively)
#
[schmarty]
"show only unread" still shows them newest-to-oldest, which means to get to the chronologically oldest stuff i need to scroll past the newest stuff, which marks those as read.
#
capjamesg
I _love_ Monocle.
#
[schmarty]
aaronpk++ i also love monocle++
#
Loqi
monocle has 1 karma over the last year
#
Loqi
aaronpk has 12 karma in this channel over the last year (101 in all channels)
#
aaronpk
should be easy enough to add a toggle to sort oldest to newest
cptaffe` joined the channel
#
aaronpk
actually I wonder... are there specific channels you _always_ want to see oldest to newest? it could be a setting per channel
#
[schmarty]
i'm open to either! this is definitely a thing i do with one channel (youtube feeds from channels i want to eventually look at but not bombarded by as "Subscriptions" in the YT apps)
#
[KevinMarks]
the one nit with monocle is for my comics group, as it calculates the height before the images load, so I have to reload to get the 'see more' button to show the full comic
#
[schmarty]
sounds like i should self-host a monocle and start hackin' and PR-ing ๐Ÿ˜„
#
[tantek]
Monocle++
#
Loqi
Monocle has 2 karma over the last year
#
aaronpk
i mean no complaints there ๐Ÿ˜Ž
#
aaronpk
on one hand I feel bad i haven't spent much time doing updates to monocle+aperture in a while, but on the other hand I still use them all the time and they have been working fine so why fix what's not broken
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, re: "why fix what's not broken", there are plenty of usability things that can be improved, edges to be smoothed etc. which I think are worth the time to do so, but as you point out, folks that notice those should say what they are!
#
aaronpk
oh sure i'm not saying it's perfect, just that it's been working well enough for me and i have had other priorities
#
[tantek]
do you see Mastodon replies in Monocle? and are you able to reply to them right there in-place?
#
aaronpk
yes and yes
#
GWG
I want to return to my reader project that I tried to take over from jackjamieson
#
[schmarty]
ooh i can't do mastodon replies or likes from monocle because it has no way for me to indicate that i want to syndicate to bridgy fed.
#
aaronpk
ah true, that's handled implicitly by my website
#
[schmarty]
(to be fair, i'm not aware of any micropub tool that lets me specify syndication on a like!)
#
aaronpk
there's definitely some work to be done on this syndication concept in general
#
[schmarty]
aaronpk i guess your site would have to since it handles _all_ the activitypub/mastodon/etc, right?
#
[schmarty]
i tend to lean towards letting what i consider to be "my site" do less by having the tools do a little more.
#
[tantek]
exploring Monocle working with sites that use Bridgy Fed would be interesting
#
[tantek]
will take protocol talk on that to #indieweb-dev
