has anyone set up a domain with omg.lol hosting? it would be great to get an example or a few on the /omg.lol page
#
capjamesg
is trying to think of a project to build.
#
[tantek]
build -> #indieweb-dev :)

[tantek]
[KevinMarks] that's not exactly the "bring your own domain" feature that's advertised. Have you set up any of those?
#
[tantek]
also can we not conflate "set up a domain" with "get a subdomain"? that's really not helpful from an IndieWeb perspective
#
[tantek]
set up a domain means exactly that, a domain you own, not a subdomain on a silo
#
[KevinMarks]
No, I did the other thing - they are in the Public Suffix List. I can have a look at other options once I'm back home
#
[tantek]
public suffix list is for cross-origin security stuff - it doesn't signify domain ownership
#
[tantek]
see also http://github.io tumblr etc. etc. etc.

[tantek] I’ve got c.omg.lol
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
Ah just read the rest of what you said. I think omg.lol only offers subdomains, but you can point a domain you own to it.
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
Neatnik, the parent company, has a separate https://dns.kitchen
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
also https://web1.land
#
[tantek]
What do you mean by "point a domain you own to it"?
#
[tantek]
Example?
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
It seems I was wrong based on poking around the dashboard but I was thinking of a CNAME

#
[tw2113]
don’t browse that domain much if you don’t want to risk adult content
#
[tantek]
what is a CNAME
#
Loqi
DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name Server (or Domain Name System) and often used to refer to the configuring thereof on a domain name registrar or on a web host https://indieweb.org/CNAME
#
[tantek]
yeah we really need to improve that explanation, because it is next to useless if you aren't already familiar with the jargon. "point" "alias" etc. none of those help with understanding what a CNAME means or why you should care if all you want is a personal website that "just works" at your own domain, not your domain . someone else's domain
#
Loqi
hey [tantek]: we try to keep dev talk (CNAME) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
[tantek]
exactly
#
[tantek]
[Caleb_Hearth] can you express what you're trying to say from a user perspective of owning your own domain / site without jargon?
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
I don’t know of a feature of omg.lol that supports bring your own domain.
#
[tantek]
their docs are quite confusing on the matter: https://home.omg.lol/info/switchboard
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
(I do, now, but didn’t then) (see above)
#
[tantek]
what do they mean by "external domain"? is that a "bring your own domain"?
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
It reads that way to me
#
[Caleb_Hearth]
this page and especially that section don’t seem to consider domains and subdomains different

unrelated, I'm ready for another round of Bridgy Fed front page redesign feedback from anyone interested!

#
Loqi
hey [snarfed]: can you move the tech talk (federated) to #indieweb-dev to keep this channel more inclusive and inviting?

[snarfed]
5) table with only current protocols (unstyled): https://20231226t141456-dot-bridgy-federated.uc.r.appspot.com/
