FB’s been a godsend for staying in touch with my extended family, they’re a diaspora spread across several countries.

I think of it like those crappy old calling cards we used to use to make international calls - tech that’s a little too sketchy for daily use but helpful in narrow cases.
#
btrem
:-D at the "too sketchy" comment.

I'm talking up here via thunderbird, actually. Kinda simplistic, but it works for our simplistic community; after all, clients like The Lounge, and stuff like that, they support a ton of features that libera.chat doesn't support, I think, like sending files and what not, right?

As well as the fact it's 02/50 in the morning for me on a work night...LOL

cambridgeport90: I'm pretty happy with Pidgin myself. I use it mainly for IRC and XMPP.

what are generations
#
Loqi
Generations was a 2014-era summary of a spectrum of potential IndieWeb adopters (beyond the oversimplified developer/user dichotomy) in a series of clusters that were expected to progressively adopt the IndieWeb for themselves and help onboard others; subsequently the community grew, both across generations & in other ways, and is working on replacing it with something more inclusive and up to date https://indieweb.org/generations
#
[tantek]
still working on it, 10 years later
#
[tantek]
since we don't have a replacement yes, there is still some utility in using the existing framework
#
[tantek]
on the Generation 2 co-hort of journalists in particular, I came across this article which felt VERY IndieWeb relevant, and discusses what problems are being solved / need new solutions, and how to use / bridge various services: https://source.opennews.org/articles/what-should-journalists-do-about-social-media/

I’m a tier 2 generation user just by self-hosting?!? I feel so fancy, like I should put on a dinner jacket on our next HWC zoom.

yes capjamesg[d], I think just like there is Bonus Galactic HWC, we need a Fancy Fits HWC
#
[tantek]
actually having fun(ny) rotating themes for HWCs could be a good source of humor & interest

What is breakfast
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "breakfast" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "breakfast is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
What is coffee?
#
Loqi
☕️ coffee is frequently available at IndieWebCamps, and also one of the more common drink posts https://indieweb.org/coffee
#
capjamesg[d]
I may not have restarted that when my sites went down on Christmas.

Gen 1 here. Wondering how many of us are still around.

There was a discussion *years* ago, in another forum, in which someone said a check mark is not universally understood to mean "correct." IIRC, in at least one culture, it means the opposite, "incorrect." Any thoughts here? Adding further refinements to my Wordle posts. I want to add a mark of some sort next to the winning guess, in as accessible a way as possible.
#
[tantek]
to2ds most of the folks here I believe are still Gen 1, and mostly in #indieweb-dev
#
[tantek]
btrem, pick the mark that is most universal / global that you can and then localize for the cultures that have a different interepretations
#
btrem
Just looked up in Wikipedia: in Sweden and Finland, the check mark means incorrect.
#
btrem
Which is what I was thinking. I'm pretty sure it was Jukka Korpela (sp?) in a web authoring usenet group who said it.
#
btrem
(Sorry, didn't explain: Jukka Korpela is from Finland.)

[tantek] - Definitely, and all top notch too!
#
btrem
I don't think I can localize by language. I mean, I suppose it's possible, but probably beyond my abilities with a shared host and no content management system on the host.
#
btrem
I'll go with check mark for the moment, with text for screen readers to explain the mark, but might change it if need be.
#
[tantek]
sounds like another use-case for abbr with aria-label
#
btrem
Nah, I'm using <span>. :-p
#
[tantek]
that works too
#
[tantek]
oops I should have said that in #indieweb-dev, apologies
#
btrem
! Me too.

TIL that in chat (at least in my client, Thunderbird), you can't start a message with a solidus. I was trying to write '/sigh' to express my mild frustration, but apparently you can't put the slash in that position.
#
[tantek]
that's common in chat clients, in Slack as well, starting with a / puts you into a command mode
#
btrem
Yeah, took me a bit to realize that must be the case.
