# [tantek] capjamesg[d], you asked me about how to prioritize what to write. sometimes it's not about prioritizing, sometimes it's about picking what feels right to write about right now, and then leaning into the flexibility & flow of where your writing/thinking takes you, and creating posts accordingly, even if they're not what you intended to write about in the first place.

# capjamesg[d] [tantek] Blog post incoming!
# capjamesg[d] Bare with me for a moment.
# capjamesg[d] I set the publish date to 2024-12-27.
# capjamesg[d] I got the year right, but not the month 😂
# capjamesg[d] So now I need to wait six minutes to re-publish the post.
# capjamesg[d] Why are dates so hard?
# capjamesg[d] I was like: why is this post not on my home page? I just hit publish!
# capjamesg[d] And thus it is done: https://jamesg.blog/2024/01/27/the-indie-web/
# capjamesg[d] [tantek]++ for the motivation.

# __roofus what do y'all think about web3 in terms of indiewebbing
# Loqi Web 3.0 (AKA #web3) is a phrase used to pitch visionary sequels to the popularity of "Web 2.0" to advocate for particular plumbing solutions looking for problems, starting with the "Semantic Web" in the late 2000s, decentralization in the 2010s, and now mostly blockchains & cryptocurrencies; the IndieWeb instead focuses directly on user-centric goals, with technologies only as a means https://indieweb.org/web3
# capjamesg[d] I read something about this lately but I can't remember where. The TL;DR is that there is only one web. We should try to make the one we have better without risk of exclusion on merits like participation in an alternate currency system.
# capjamesg[d] That was it!
# capjamesg[d] This is the document: https://w3ctag.github.io/the-web-is-not-versioned/
# __roofus capjamesg[d]: The issue with our web is the fact that providers can just censor websites they don't like because it is centralised
# __roofus Also SEO exists 😭
# __roofus capjamesg[d]: Yes I agree with that article. But even then migrating one's blog into a decentralized system makes information immutable by entites that aren't the owner of said webpage or chatroom.
# capjamesg[d] The web is decentralized 😊
# capjamesg[d] But!
# capjamesg[d] I think you might appreciate this https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc9518.html
# __roofus To be honest the blockchain has just gotten a horrible rep from all the shitty scammers and fraudsters trying to make a quick buck from what is ultimately the most realistic way to escape censorship.
# __roofus capjamesg[d]: Very nice article! The issue is many places on the internet benefit from discussion platforms and those platforms usually need so much computing power due to needing to process all the incoming requests that they almost require external hosting to be practical.

# __roofus Websites like the daily storm or kiwifarms are examples of sites taken down by cloudflare because (and i'm not even joking here) the CEO of the company woke up one day and decided that these people were too much of assholes to be allowed to exist, and so their sites were taken down.
# __roofus Yes I am aware those websites might've had some very unsavoury content but it even then it is a part of the nature of the web to allow these unsavoury content to exist *as long as they are NOT obviously illegal(mainly CSAM or ecommerce of very illegal goods)*
# capjamesg[d] Lower level internet protocols aren't really our topic of expertise. I happen to have read that post from Mark Nottingham, but that's most of what I have read on the topic recently.
# capjamesg[d] You'll find the community talk more about things like how to get a website set up, how to start writing a blog post for the first time, etc. There are probably others out there on the web who know more about the lower level systems regarding censorship.
# capjamesg[d] I believe you can even join the HTTP working group mailing list (where they debate these low-level protocols) to follow along and weigh in on their work!
# capjamesg[d] I think the Internet Archive has hosted events on decentralization at varying levels of technology before, but I can't recall the details.
# __roofus capjamesg[d]: Again it's just something to consider. Loved your blog tho, saw it on hacker news and it seems intresting.
# capjamesg[d] Thank you!
