# cambridgeport90 aI just read through the conversations that were tking place earlier in the day...I missed it, but my thought is that people who are on the internet, why have a web site publically available if not to share information with the world; if the site is only for yourself, then, what in all honesty, is the point?
# cambridgeport90 When I say for yourself, in this context, I mean only accessible behind, say, your own personal virtual private network; for that is the only truly private site, is one that's not available to the public internet. The indieweb is the good side of what's published on the internet, stays on the internet.
# cambridgeport90 And thanks [snarfed] for the insights on this!
# cambridgeport90 I think that if something is posted publically, then the expectation should naturally be that it should be shared, re-shared, and so on, since it was public to begin with.
# cambridgeport90 I could say something else here, but I don't want to come off to harshly.
# cambridgeport90 Ah...whereas, I'm one of those "internet everywhere" kind of people, and I have a tendency to post my contact info so that people can find me. Either I've been lucky, or there are actually more nice people in the world than there are not so nice people, but the negativity seems to overshadow everything?
# cambridgeport90 I also see that this issue seems to be more on the Fediverse than coming from personal sites.
# cambridgeport90 The Fediverse is the only time where I got reported to an admin for disagreeing with somebody politically, actually, so I have learned a valuable lesson; don't talk about politics anywhere, not even on your own site.
# Loqi ok, I added "https://www.citationneeded.news/we-need-to-talk-about-digital-ownership/#footnote-anchor-" to the "See Also" section of /own_your_data https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=93066&oldid=90383

# [Joe_Crawford] [KevinMarks] It gives me inordinate pleasure to see Bow Wow Wow and C-30 C-60 C-90 go mentioned (many hours ago, of course) https://youtu.be/81c1L8SrXcU?si=3mb5JLH8pUgBN2dm

# cambridgeport90 I used to do quite a bit of taping of local music I either borrowed or watched on TV in the case of a television performance.

# _tommys tangential, but i'm so glad that people did take recording equipment to gigs, because i've been enjoying bootlegs a lot recently
# _tommys and those performances would've been lost
# _tommys there's a guy on soulseek with dozens of old Autechre recordings from before they started doing their official releases
# [tantek] did anyone use the service/software Skiff? https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/09/notion-acquires-privacy-focused-productivity-platform-skiff/
# [tantek] this is an interesting page about data (and domain!) migration: https://skiff.com/data-migration

# [tantek] This article sounds very IndieWeb (already added it to a few relevant pages with quotes) and straddles the user / developer divide a bit which makes me wonder how it reads to others (in terms of expressing things like files or formats) https://stephango.com/file-over-app

# [Al_Abut] It’s funny that the concept of files has become a technical topic. As in even being aware of the existence of them. Everything is so app-based that I’ve heard of high-end graduate schools that have an intro class to explain files, folders, all of the desktop basics first before getting into research.
# [tantek] except that "files" is very much now a user known feature in iOS : https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-use-the-files-app-on-iphone-ipad
# [Al_Abut] Big difference between “it’s possible to use if you know the existence of” and “common for everyone”
# [Al_Abut] I use Files on iOS all the time but I know it’s not the norm
# [Al_Abut] Ha! Tech press != mainstream
# [Al_Abut] Yeah it’s not the best but I’m kind of forced to for photography
# [Al_Abut] Oh Books, so much potential. Remember pushpoppress? The futuristic-looking one with animations from one of the original iPhone designers.
# [Al_Abut] Mike Matas or something
# [Al_Abut] Totally. I try to console myself along the lines of “good enough” is a close enough substitute for “feature complete”
# [Al_Abut] Yeah, it’s putting a positive spin on mediocrity. Coping mechanism for sure.
# [Al_Abut] Whenever I want to feel better about apps like that, I just open Sony’s mobile app for connecting to their cameras.
# [Al_Abut] Then I laugh and say “there’s always worse!” and go about my day.
# [jeremycherfas] Good to know that there’s another Sony user who struggles with that mess. Makes me wonder whether any photographer at Sony has ever tried to use it.
# [Al_Abut] Sony as an unexpected source of stoicism
# [Al_Abut] Hahaha! See! Told you.
# [Al_Abut] And to think this was written pre-openai…
# [Al_Abut] Well don’t get me started on the American education system… 😉
