aI just read through the conversations that were tking place earlier in the day...I missed it, but my thought is that people who are on the internet, why have a web site publically available if not to share information with the world; if the site is only for yourself, then, what in all honesty, is the point?
#
cambridgeport90
When I say for yourself, in this context, I mean only accessible behind, say, your own personal virtual private network; for that is the only truly private site, is one that's not available to the public internet. The indieweb is the good side of what's published on the internet, stays on the internet.
#
cambridgeport90
And thanks [snarfed] for the insights on this!
#
cambridgeport90
I think that if something is posted publically, then the expectation should naturally be that it should be shared, re-shared, and so on, since it was public to begin with.
#
cambridgeport90
I could say something else here, but I don't want to come off to harshly.
#
[tantek]
cambridgeport90 the people complaining don't have their own publicly available site, they have accounts on Mastodon instances that are "semi-public" from their (perhaps mistaken) perspective
#
cambridgeport90
Ah...whereas, I'm one of those "internet everywhere" kind of people, and I have a tendency to post my contact info so that people can find me. Either I've been lucky, or there are actually more nice people in the world than there are not so nice people, but the negativity seems to overshadow everything?
#
cambridgeport90
I also see that this issue seems to be more on the Fediverse than coming from personal sites.
#
cambridgeport90
The Fediverse is the only time where I got reported to an admin for disagreeing with somebody politically, actually, so I have learned a valuable lesson; don't talk about politics anywhere, not even on your own site.

tangential, but i'm so glad that people did take recording equipment to gigs, because i've been enjoying bootlegs a lot recently

This article sounds very IndieWeb (already added it to a few relevant pages with quotes) and straddles the user / developer divide a bit which makes me wonder how it reads to others (in terms of expressing things like files or formats) https://stephango.com/file-over-app
#
[tantek]
yes I realize right there at the start it was "_File over app_ is an appeal to tool makers" though I think it is written in a way to appeal to a broader audience than that
#
[tantek]

It’s funny that the concept of files has become a technical topic. As in even being aware of the existence of them. Everything is so app-based that I’ve heard of high-end graduate schools that have an intro class to explain files, folders, all of the desktop basics first before getting into research.
#
[tantek]
except that "files" is very much now a user known feature in iOS : https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-use-the-files-app-on-iphone-ipad
#
[Al_Abut]
Big difference between “it’s possible to use if you know the existence of” and “common for everyone”
#
[tantek]
it's common enough that there are multiple "mainstream" tech press articles written about it
#
[Al_Abut]
I use Files on iOS all the time but I know it’s not the norm
#
[Al_Abut]
Ha! Tech press != mainstream
#
[tantek]
I have resisted using it in iOS because I didn't want the tidyingtax of yet another place to organize files
#
[Al_Abut]
Yeah it’s not the best but I’m kind of forced to for photography
#
[tantek]
however I'm starting to lean towards using Files instead of Books because the Books browsing/deleting UI is _so bad_
#
[Al_Abut]
Oh Books, so much potential. Remember pushpoppress? The futuristic-looking one with animations from one of the original iPhone designers.
#
[Al_Abut]
Mike Matas or something
#
[tantek]
like literally using Files *just* for PDFs I view/download from the web to use offline
#
[tantek]
it's very sad how much Books and frankly Contacts are such crappy legacy UIs with near zero advancements in 10+ years
#
[Al_Abut]
Totally. I try to console myself along the lines of “good enough” is a close enough substitute for “feature complete”
#
[tantek]
I'm thinking of limiting Books to only things downloaded from the iTunes store or whatever that's called today
#
[tantek]
they're closer to mediocre than "good enough" IMO but yeah I get that too
#
[Al_Abut]
Yeah, it’s putting a positive spin on mediocrity. Coping mechanism for sure.

Whenever I want to feel better about apps like that, I just open Sony’s mobile app for connecting to their cameras.
#
[Al_Abut]
Then I laugh and say “there’s always worse!” and go about my day.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Good to know that there’s another Sony user who struggles with that mess. Makes me wonder whether any photographer at Sony has ever tried to use it.
#
[tantek]
lol “there’s always worse!” is such a good way to let go and keep moving

Sony as an unexpected source of stoicism

"Gradually, Garland came to the same realization that many of her fellow educators have reached in the past four years: the concept of file folders and directories, essential to previous generations’ understanding of computers, is gibberish to many modern students."

I think if you change your theme for a specific holiday, you can add that to your IndieWeb Examples entry on /holiday
#
[tantek]
what is a holiday
#
Loqi
A holiday theme is a temporary custom CSS or other change in a website typically meant to visually indicate the celebration of a holiday or special occasion https://indieweb.org/holiday
#
[tantek]
and if we see more than one person doing it, we can add it to a list of such holidays that multiple community members are celebrating
#
capjamesg
I have my holiday emojis.

capjamesg, do you have a list of your holiday emojis? I started down the holiday emoji rabbithole and realized that many (most?) "holiday" emojis are actually primarily about something broader than the holiday.

e.g. 🦃 is a turkey, and might invoke "Thanksgiving" to some, but certainly not vegetarians/vegans

Not a holiday theme, but one year I did set up a form on my site that let people request a hand-drawn Valentine card, that was fun. I think I forgot to take photos of what I drew, though!
