I am figuring out a transition strategy for reducing and eventually stopping referring to people using their Twitter @-handles. Step one is a new policy of if they haven't posted on a social media account in the past year, then I will take that as information that they don't want that profile used refer to them as part of their identity. Treating such absences as quiet quits as it were.
#
[tantek]
I also now have a use-case for @-domain/path which is scoped @-names for IG profiles, e.g. @instagram.com/tantek (yes the auto link function in CASSIS supports this, and I blogged about it a while ago)
#
[tantek]
Interestingly, X supports redirecting from an auto-linked @-@ URL to someone's canonical profile URL
#
[tantek]
so I can say, for example, @t@x.com and it is auto-linked without any network traffic to a URL which works

Sometimes I hold back from learning a particular topic and then when a good course or learning material comes along then I dive in
#
[morganm]
ready to do this for web components, Scott Jehl has a course on kickstarter, due soon

catgirlin_space0[d] Does Aperture say something like 0 items under any of the feeds that you have subscribed to?
#
capjamesg[d]
I ran into an issue where sometimes it wouldn't register some feeds.
#
capjamesg[d]
If Aperture says 10 items or whatever the number is, that indicates it may be an issue with Monocle.

I am relearning the seemingly obvious trade-off of that you can publish a post that is timely, or (even only reasonably) thorough, but not both.
#
[tantek]
I am considering a tactic of timely posts that are a one-sentence summary of the timely facts. optional one sentence summary of how it felt/feels. optional "Previously" section that links to prior posts on the topic, and finally, closing with a line of hashtags so you can more easily find the post in the future (to link to it from the eventual more thorough post).
#
[tantek]
wondering if anyone else has tactics or strategies for posting timely posts vs thorough posts

tantek++ sounds like you're just considering microblogging more! whereas before you've mostly blogged more than microblogged

#
[tantek]
[snarfed] length or post type has nothing to do with it. I've written long notes and short articles.

"nothing" is maybe an exaggeration, it's obviously harder to write a long timely post than a short one, but agreed that they're not the same thing

yeah there's some overlap, though re: "obviously harder to write long(er)" β€” I am reminded of Pascal's quote: (en translation thereof) "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time. " https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Blaise_Pascal#Quotes
#
[snarfed]
hah yes. easy to write short and non-thorough (or more "right"), more effort to write long and thorough, even more effort to write short(er) and still thorough/"right"

that sounds like a good infographic flow chart πŸ˜‚
#
gRegor
that's a mouthful, haha
#
gRegor
could you make it shorter? ;)
#
capjamesg[d]
Start. The rest comes later.

That's my attempt at making it shorter πŸ˜„

Not my utter best writing but I am so happy today, a blog post that I wrote about a year ago and didnt get a lot of enthusiasm for or at least it felt flat at the time, now has a new enthused reader who works in civic tech and may influence web performance policies https://www.morganwebdev.org/posts/guidelines/

literally its what its all about. its why one may consider getting a domain, putting words somewhere, so that someone reads it, and it forms some kind of new connection

does anybody have any experience with dreamhost?

i have a domain and mail through them, but i want to set up web hosting through vultr,

and i'm very confused about how to configure vultr to send mail back to dreamhost,
#

or if i should migrate the whole thing away from dreamhost alltogether, and to what, if so
#
beanbrain
i have seen them, but

Hosting in one place and email directed through another is probably a matter of DNS records, which is probably better for our #indieweb-dev channel
#
beanbrain
ah i'll add myself to that channel thanks
#
beanbrain
it's a little strange, but i wonder if i should just reach out to them and ask what is their experience
#
gRegor
I've found their support helpful and responsive, worth a shot.

I everyone sorry im not more active in this server lol. Ive been wondering how I would get started with indieweb?
#
[morganm]
I guess there would be the wiki and other things with advice to get started, but I would prefer to say it starts in your ideas and thinking, approach the web as something that works for you and that you control rather than giving up yourself as easily to algorithmic feeds and platforms which get worse by the day
#
[morganm]
Thats my inspirational chat heh

I just dont know how to even start haha
#
[morganm]
Do you own a domain or used one before?
#
[morganm]
Theres definitely a lot of ways to potentially get started, but basically (from what I have gathered) the real energy around here is about owning your online presence, and that usually starts with a domain
#
[morganm]
its more like renting, but there are many options
#
[morganm]
https://home.omg.lol/ < - one example I came across recently
#
[morganm]
Basically do whatever it is you love online but if your excited about being indieweb find ways to create and do online stuff thats more sort of durable and long lasting or unmediated . A bunch of folks around here are constantly tooling their websites and related web stuff to give it this sort of feel
#
gRegor
what is getting started
#
Loqi
πŸŽ‰ Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Getting_started
#
gRegor
You could also join one of our virtual Homebrew Website Club meetups, good place to see what others are doing on their sites and get inspiration.
#
gRegor
https://events.indieweb.org/tag/hwc they're in a couple different timezones
#
gRegor
Also don't worry about being more or less active on the server, life happens :)
