# [morganm] I started this side project and now I'm struggling to get the energy or time to finish it. Luckily there is no deadline or need to worry , but I still feel some internal pressure. One person who I am a huge fan of signed up for the booklet when it's finished https://core2024.net

# capjamesg[d] [morganm] What does "Only try and build a second brain if necessary" mean?
# [morganm] I sort of elaborate on it roughly in a few details summary elements below but basically "building a second brain" is a buzzword phrase from the various note taking cultures online such as around Logseq and Obsidian
# [morganm] I suggest that it's better to preserve and sustain information with 'one brain' than trying to create a whole new thing
# capjamesg[d] I love wikis as a collaborative concept.
# capjamesg[d] The IndieWeb wiki, for example, has been an incredible point of reference for me over the last few years.
# capjamesg[d] I have found that I prefer to write blog posts so I can sit down and think through one particular thing. I can, and often do, write more about that same topic. In a sense, the posts weave to become my thoughts on the topic.
# capjamesg[d] I find prose more natural to write.
# capjamesg[d] With that said, everyone learns differently!
# capjamesg[d] Some people like mind maps, others like writing bullet notes, others like writing long sentences. Some people like visuals, some people prefer text.
# [morganm] If you want to you can watch some YouTube videos about the building a second brain stuff -- it presents itself as a sort of philosophy that you can sort of make these linked notes all over the place and then use the tools to find patterns and ideate or innovate things. The general thrust of it is that more is better, find order in chaos or something like that
# [morganm] My zine/booklet says that actually getting comfortable with less is better

# capjamesg[d] I love notes.
# [morganm] Notes++
# capjamesg[d] I need to get over feeling stressed about having lots of notes 😂
# [morganm] Sometimes we write to remember, sometimes we write to forget, notes are good. But don't go watching a YouTube influencer and feel you need to create a billion notes is all I'm saying heh
# [morganm] (I did that for a bit )
# [morganm] The appeal of Obsidian and Logseq is that its local first and stores the notes in markdown
# [morganm] Logseq has some shadowy venture capital backing by that guy a18z or whatever so I'm less inclined to like it, and it's features are more than I like
# [morganm] Obsidian is awesome and really neat but it feels like it's getting jam-packed with features now
# Loqi Obsidian is a free, multi-platform application for writing and maintaining plain text notes (for longevity) as markdown files that provides a modest paid hosting service one can use with a personal-domain https://indieweb.org/Obsidian
# [qubyte] Notes are fine. Even cross linking them can be for the right kind of thing (I do this). What I’ve noticed with some folk using logeq, obsidian, etc. is that there’s a ritual to it but nothing comes out the other end. The second brain thing is some sort of weird fad to some imo. Maybe I’ve just never seen the practice used well.
# [morganm] YES. I put a lot of effort into linking my notes and using both Logseq and Obsidian inspired by the sort of hype and then at the end of it I basically was left with a fancy looking graph view of all the connections of my notes and no particular funnel of value or output
# [morganm] ... Again, this was a major inspiration for my zine booklet which emphasizes sustainability over new ventures like this
# [morganm] Notes == good ; additional heady philosophy around taking notes == not always good basically
# [morganm] :D

# chrisaldrich capjamesg[d] the overwhelm of information overload or stress about lots of notes is not a new thing: Blair, Ann M. Too Much to Know: Managing Scholarly Information before the Modern Age. Yale University Press, 2010. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300165395/too-much-know.
# chrisaldrich Since the 1500s people have been "selling systems" to manage all these things. Notebooks, index cards, databases, Wikis, Websites, Obsidian, Logseq. They all have the same sorts of affordances, one just needs to know why they're using a particular tool for their notes and have some expectations about what they want to get out of using it. Otherwise it's all just another shiny object. 💎
# chrisaldrich Happy Friday taktek!

# chrisaldrich I've got it in my calendar, but I'm awaiting confirmation from the family that one pending event will occur the following weekend.
# [Joe_Crawford] Your typewriter specific workflows have come up several times in IWC meetings since last year. Fingers crossed that the timing works out for you.
# chrisaldrich Joe_Crawford, I have a couple dozen more typewriters in the collection since then. It'll be some work to decide which one(s) to bring this time around.
# chrisaldrich tantek, you mean the LEGO typewriter set they sell or one you're building that actually types?
