do we usually have events like indieweb101, organised by the community to the outside world, so to dsay?
#
paotsaq
I wonder because maybe I could try and organise something at my university. Lots of gen-z engineers that would maybe appreciate this different perspective on the internet

#
[tantek]
yes, we do HWC for that sort of thing, getting started, indieweb 101 etc.
#
[tantek]
what is HWC

Homebrew Website Club is a growing world-wide network of meetups for everyone who wants to take back their web experience from social media silos, and own their online identities & content, or just want support with blogging! https://indieweb.org/hwc

what is Getting Started
#
Loqi
🎉 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/getting_started
#
paotsaq
hmm — so this would be sort of organizing a HWC here?
#
[tantek]
exactly
#
[tantek]
what is organizing HWC
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "organizing HWC" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "organizing HWC is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
there we go

#
[tantek]
^ that link will go to the specific section, even though the preview is about the whole page
#
paotsaq
yeah, I remember this page — and some information on the technicalities of organizing these meetups, since you mentioned it at the closing of IWC Berlin
#
paotsaq
Denmark has apparently no history of IWC and this would be at a rather remote campus/location, mostly geared towards engineering students. of course, the reliable internet connection makes it easier for other people to join in (if the format for such allows)
#
[tantek]
yes you can definitely organize an in-person only HWC!
#
[tantek]
HWC Nuremberg operates that way I believe

I have been thinking about hosting my own Etherpad.
#
[tantek]
maybe more of a #indieweb-dev thing, definitely not a typical user thing IMO
#
[mattl]
capjamesg: Its been a while since I set one up but I think something like NextCloud or OwnCloud has similar functionality but is more aimed at users not developers.
#
[tantek]
I also would not recommend anyone try to setup / admin an Etherpad who is not a developer and ready to be an admin because it has multiple abuse vectors that you have to stay on top of or else you end up with a massive problem on your domain (enough to get yourself blocked by search engines etc.)
#
[tantek]
more details than that -> #indieweb-dev
#
[mattl]
I think Creative Commons had one and when I came in it was full of spam and other crap, so I just redirected it to the Mozilla one which seemed to have at least some people looking at it.
#
[tantek]
and the Mozilla one was shutdown for similar (and worse) reasons

do people have strategies for quickly publishing their Foursquare lists?
#
[tantek]
more backfill than PESOS
#
[tantek]
reminder that the site goes offline in under a month
#
[tantek]
like I'm more interested in the specific use-case of the LIST rather than all the individual venues, reviews etc. because when I go down those rabbitholes then nothing gets done. a bit of the perfect is the enemy of the good / scope creep problems
#
aaronpk
oof i forgot about my lists
#
aaronpk
i guess i would just put them in a blog post for now
#
[tantek]
they're more like tag aggregation pages than blog posts though
#
[tantek]
or wiki pages at the base level since they're more "evergreen" than date-specific content

hey [Joe_Crawford], [tantek]: it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (codepen, CSS)
#

ok, I added "brainstorming CSS / design from FReSH 2024-11-21: https://codepen.io/artlung/pen/VwoJoGR" to the "See Also" section of /timeline https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=98586&oldid=97797

#

actually i guess i do have "wiki"-like pages, the posts without a date in the URL
#
[tantek]
^ right, those!

I thought lists from Foursquare were moving to Swarm?

if links are going to break, might as well break them by moving things to your own domain
