I didn't know it was possible to sign up on bluesky using a domain — that is interesting.
#
paotsaq
but I'm not really up to date on how domain politics work outside of using big services like namecheap, etc. — I'm mostly worried about the costs of maintaining a domain long term.
#
[tantek]
perhaps 1/10th the costs of maintaining a phone number long term, which you presumably do
#
paotsaq
maybe — but aren't we rather at the mercy of domain providers?
#
paotsaq
this is something I could easily look up to have a bigger understanding of how exactly it works, but I wonder if there is a way to independently — or with a more long-term thinking company — set up your domain for a period of 5 years or something. but I suppose you can already do this with namecheap
#
paotsaq
i'm overthinking! all good. good morning, tantek!
#
[tantek]
similarly your phone number is at the mercy of cellphone providers, who seem to be much more vulnerable to say, social engineering simjack attacks for example
#
paotsaq
that is true. I probably just recognize in them a bigger sense of authority or reliability, but it's really the other way around
#
paotsaq
in any case I'd definitely be interested in using my own domain on bsky — should look into that soon
#
[tantek]
the difference is that you can swap domain providers all over the world, whereas cellphone providers you're likely limited to your country or region
#
[tantek]
this tends to make domain providers more competitive and work harder to earn your trust, since you have more options, and lower switching costs
#
[tantek]
so whenever you have concerns about domain providers, remember that you've handwaved away 10x such concerns about your cellphone provider
#
paotsaq
yeah, probably internet provider as well

paotsaq
nice perspective

Re: domain name registrars, I recommend not using your registrar for DNS... makes being able to switch much easier.

[snarfed] I’ve been trying to figure out why I can’t log into my site http://calebhearth.com on https://fed.brid.gy/web-site. Is it on a blocklist? Or maybe an API check is being made? I do a reverse proxy of some .well-known endpoints from my mastodon instance at http://pub.calebhearth.com. https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/blob/main/web.py#L653 seems to be where I’m getting caught, as that’s the flash I see.

Might be #indieweb-dev and I can move if so

> There is no such thing as "my Substack", there is only your writing
#
[mattl]
I've noticed people tend to say that a lot... "my Twitter", "my Facebook", etc.
#
[tantek]
sure, people say "my Blogspot", "my Tumblr", "my Livejournal". why does it really matter when these can all just be POSSE destinations?

I wish whoever worked on the document I'm fixing today used a text editor instead of what I'm assuming is Microsoft Word

[tantek] I'm trying to think of what extra information I want in my site search.

I just added support to find the emoji associated with a keyword, something I commonly search for on Google.
#
[tantek]
capjamesg[d] I just tried searching for a single emoji 😂 and got an error: There was an error searching for "😂". If this error persists, please email …
#
capjamesg[d]
[tantek] Sorry, I meant the English common name for an emoji.
#
capjamesg[d]
It looks like I broke everything by accident 😂
