is there an indie alternative to voice acting sites? i keep seing privacy policies that essentially say "we get to use your voicereels and demos and auditionings for voice acting roles to feed to AI, sell it, profile you etc."
#
curiousindie
good example is CastingCall.club
#
curiousindie
people without an account can see posts, only members can hear submissions (basically a comment with an audiofile attached.)
#
gRegor
oof, that sucks about them feeding it into AI
#
curiousindie
yes(!) it feels like it is with the art community and AI, but not acted against tbh
#
curiousindie
the only cool thing is hearing other voice actors' submissions for roles you're looking at. it's really a driving force for me and others to get up and record for a role.
#
gRegor
Hm CastingCall seems to indicate they don't do AI? "6.4 CCC has not and will not use User Submissions for AI training purposes."
#
curiousindie
oh?!
#
curiousindie
i got overly pessimistic by the OPT-OUT section containing hundreds of vendors tbh - my bias!
#
gRegor
I'm not in the industry so don't know alternatives. You could set up a personal site as a portfolio and post stuff there, but then discovery becomes an issue
#
curiousindie
yes, i'm looking at fediverse stuff right now. Mobilizion seems cool with events on a big wall to sort through - without algorithms! also groups for projects. i wonder if comments under posts could contain audio submissions.
#
curiousindie
/open question
#
curiousindie
lol actually reading the ToS and it still feels like my bias is confirmed. i got my hopes up for nothing when you mentioned that snippet about AI, gRegor ! /neutral tone
#
gRegor
Oh, sorry
#
curiousindie
quote, 6.2 "You grant to CCC a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, fully sublicenseable license to use, distribute, edit, display, archive, publish, sublicense, perform, reproduce, make available, transmit, broadcast, sell, translate, and create derivative works of those User Submissions, and your name, voice, likeness and other identifying information where part of User Submissions, in any form, media, software, or technology of any
#
curiousindie
kind now known or hereafter developed, in each case, for any purpose whatsoever, commercial or otherwise, without compensation to you:"
#
gRegor
That's a pretty common bit of legalese, which usually just means "we need this in order to publish stuff on your behalf"
#
gRegor
I am not a lawyer, of course
#
curiousindie
is it? i might be too much of a pessimist with the sublicensing and selling and derivative works sounding like "our partners buy your voices for their AI models, all legal" to me

either way an indie/fediverse alternative to selfhost or join will be awesome
#
curiousindie
hej
#
gRegor
true, "sell" and "derivative works" are concerning there. Most of the stuff before that is common though

I have a question about Bridgy fed. I noticed something kinda funny
#
Kongaloosh
My domain is being properly picked up and my dns did is set
#
Kongaloosh
But bridgy fed lists a different did on my page
#
curiousindie
appreciate to hear that, gRegor
#
Kongaloosh
Has anyone run into a similar issue?
#
gRegor
Hiya Kongaloosh, we can probably help more with that in #indieweb-dev
#
Kongaloosh
Woops. It’s been a while since I irc’d and I got a bit turned around
#
gRegor
No problem :)
#
Kongaloosh
Thanks gRegor 🙏

related to the discussion about timestamps: numbering things with serial numbers isn't great either, unless your site follows a strict chronological format
#
immibis
the above legalese says they can do whatever the f they want with your uploads

the FediVerse doesn't seem to have anything like itch.io nor like NewGrounds - a site to upload games to.
#
curiousindie
open question: is there any already-made open-source stack for handling user-uploaded html5-games to a site?
#
curiousindie
thanks @immibis that's what i read like to me too

Until now I’ve focused on getting a super lean and cheap setup up and running with (almost) 100/100/100/100 lighthouse score and a headless cms (Decap CMS with custom components). I still have some way to go and I tinker with it almost every day. Next up is probably getting newsletter publishing to work and then federation etc. I am sure people in this community are way ahead of me so I hope to learn a lot from you all ☺️ Glad I

Hey all! Happy to have found this community. I’m a Danish guy who’s been building “a home on the internet” on my domain https://xopla.net for about a year now for pretty much the exact same reasons I think this community exist: To make my content live outside silos and also be able to write and create more freely with less technical constraints from platforms (I make WebGL stuff so it’s for example nice to be able to embed m

hey staus., it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical (federation), can you take it to #indieweb-dev?
