on a more lighthearted note, i have an interesting conundrum
#
aaronpk
i have been digitizing old family video tapes, and I want to share some clips from them
#
aaronpk
should I create backdated posts from like 1996 on my site?
#
aaronpk
if I write any text that goes along with it, I would post it as a new post, but there's a bunch of stuff I'd like to have online with no other commentary, so i'm tempted to backdate it
#
[morganm]
I don't think so
#
aaronpk
i also use my site as an archive often, to browse through past years to see what I was doing. so for that reason I would also like the posts backdated
#
[morganm]
I have a posters brain too and post many things, but I don't see any value for anyone reading the backdate as anything other than demonstrating how online one is
#
aaronpk
haha that's one way to look at it
#
[morganm]
The alternative is a new post announcing a new discovery of old material ? Makes it less of a demonstration in my mind just a preference
#
aaronpk
i think i talked myself in to backdating the videos
#
[morganm]
Sure heh
#
aaronpk
i may make some of them private posts, just for me
#
[tantek]
pretty sure we have a whole page discussing thoughts about this because GWG was doing something similar with material from the 1980s
#
[tantek]
what is backdating
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "backdating" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "backdating is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
aaronpk
i vaguely remember that
#
aaronpk
what is throwback?
#
Loqi
A throwback is a current post of content from some time ago, typically at least days, often years https://indieweb.org/throwback
#
[tantek]
what is a throwback
#
Loqi
A throwback is a current post of content from some time ago, typically at least days, often years https://indieweb.org/throwback
#
aaronpk
your examples there are exactly what i was thinking: "Create a backdated post (retropost) with only the content that was created as of the point in time of the backdate, no subsequent annotations"
#
[tantek]
yup, glad I already wrote down my thoughts at the time 😂 https://indieweb.org/throwback#Backdated_post_restrictions
#
[tantek]
upon cursory rereading I think I stand by those brainstorms
#
[tantek]
now what I really should do is add my indieweb examples as I have MANY time published posts of photos taken days / weeks / months before
#
[tantek]
and my technique for solving the "browse through past years to see what I was doing" use-case is using "hashdatetags"
#
Loqi

#
[tantek]
that post was published more than two months after the event and photos therein. thus I hashdatetagged it #2022_219 #20220807
#
[tantek]
now what I have yet to build is the "what was I doing on this day" view which would present some union of posts created on that day, and posts ABOUT that day (which would be automatically queried via such hashdatetags)
#
aaronpk
that'd be cool
#
aaronpk
what is date tagging?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "date tagging" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "date tagging is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
in this case, I did not post on the day itself of the event, and didn't want to
#
[tantek]
yeah I just made that up. datetag datetagging hashdatetag hashdatetagging etc. but have been practicing it for quite some time
#
aaronpk
i don't do that very often, but I suspect I do have an occasional post about a day that I post a short amount of time after (short being days/weeks/months, but not years)
#
[tantek]
I don't know anyone else that uses hashtags like that to tag the "what date is this post about" info
#
aaronpk
I don't know if I would do it with hashtags, but I like the idea
#
aaronpk
wow, my posting frequency has really gone down a lot the last few months

aaronpk, apparently I've also used hashdatetags on posts about FUTURE events, e.g. https://tantek.com/2019/348/t1/running-muc50-first-50-mile
#
[tantek]
published in 2019 with hashdatetags #2020_074 #20200314 about planning to run a race on that future date
#
[tantek]
and apparently multiple hashdatetags on a post about multiple days: https://tantek.com/2019/204/t2/running-hiking-tunnel-creek-lake-tahoe using hashdatetags #20190719 #20190720 #20190721 #2019_200 #2019_201 #2019_202

recorded a few of those examples for now in /throwback page, and if anyone else finds or publishing hashdatetags, we can create a separate page for that with past, present, future examples

hello. I am reading the getting start page. Is there info on a suitable webserver for indieweb sites?

What is hosting?
#
Loqi
Web hosting can be the primary regular cost in maintaining an IndieWeb site; this page lists several options from free on up depending on your publishing needs, like a static, shared, private, or dedicated server https://indieweb.org/hosting
#
capjamesg[d]
That page may be helpful for you ^

chomwitt
thanks.

i thought about having two metadata dates on posts - when it was posted, and when the events it describes happened. but actually why does my site need to be a chronological list of posts? it doesn't, and maybe shouldn't. i still haven't fixed it though.

#
SystemPrompt
ordering by post date is only important when you're looking at a site as a chronological stream, to see new things since you last visited, or using something like RSS

[tantek]
what is on this day
#
Loqi
on this day is a feature on some silos and indieweb sites which show posts published on the current (typically Gregorian) day of the year in previous years; commons sites tend to show more general historical events that occurred on that same day https://indieweb.org/on_this_day

what is Special:RandomPage
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Special:RandomPage" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Special:RandomPage is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
hi SystemPrompt, do you have a personal website?
#
SystemPrompt
https://immibis.com/ but it needs work. today I improved the navigation sidebar.
#
SystemPrompt
every page with this sidebar is generated by the application server written in C. there's a patchwork of what is directed to the application server and what's a static file at the moment.
#
Loqi
SystemPrompt has 1 karma over the last year
#
[tantek]
SystemPrompt++ nice clean minimal yet quite readable design and spot use of color to indicate nav and context.
#
immibis
it's inspired by readthedocs
#
immibis
but then on the right side is this big white box that has to be filled with some kind of "content"
#
immibis

I like this idea of a separate "likes" page especially for folks that don't want to include their likes in their default / home / "main" stream/feed: https://reillyspitzfaden.com/likes/

Does anyone else have a dedicated likes page for this reason or other reasons? Perhaps if so that's a pattern we could document
