#connorgurneyhi, all! just taken the plunge and "joined" the IndieWeb, so to speak. a little on my motivations, if anyone cares: connorgurney.me.uk/notes/20241203-indieweb-intro.html
#Loqi[preview] [Tantek Çelik] This is a summary curation of prior posts of mine on why post, what to post, and how to post, as well as some bits I wrote on the #IndieWeb wiki. This post assumes you already have a blog — if you don’t have one and wonder why you should, that’...

#KolevHi all. So IndieWeb is built on WordPress, basically?
[lazcorp] joined the channel
#[lazcorp]Kolev - no, there are plenty of us who don't use WordPress
#Kolev[lazcorp], well, right now, I use a static site generator on a subdirectory on someone else's web server.
#[lazcorp]I know there are quite a few people here who use Static Site Generators for their sites
#Loqihey Kolev, [lazcorp], we try to keep dev talk (site generator, static site generator, static site generators) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#immibishey immibis, we try to keep meta talk out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-meta?
klymilark and FaRiD joined the channel
#[tantek]immibis, there are good reasons why each channel has been created and scoped over the years. If the scope in #indieweb or Loqi's nudging or number of channels bothers you, please consider departing the ones that are deliberately scoped like that and focus on the ones that speak to your preferred topics like in #indieweb-dev

#Loqi🎉 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Get_Started
#[tantek]^ Kolev, plenty of options there, and yes WordPress is one among many options
#Loqi✨ Encouraging a plurality of projects with a self-motivated incentive to interoperate is a key principle of the indie web, in contrast to monoculture efforts which require or even encourage everyone to install the same software, or use the same online service, in order to interoperate https://indieweb.org/plurality
#[tantek]^ that may be helpful too Kolev. Indieweb is not built on any one software project but rather encourages many options that interoperate through open standards
#[tantek]immibis, read https://indieweb.org/discuss#indieweb and as you yourself pointed out, please follow up with any further questions about channel purpose in #indieweb-meta. Appreciated!
#Loqi🎁 Welcome to the IndieWeb Gift Calendar! The 2024 IndieWeb Gift Calendar is the 8th annual group effort to gift (ship) one or more IndieWeb-related thing(s) each day of December that others can use to improve their IndieWeb experience https://indieweb.org/gift_calendar
#[tantek]Hey everyone we're on day 3 of the 2024 IndieWeb Gift Calendar! Looks like we have at least one gift for today. Anyone else wrapping something up for the community?

#Kolev[tantek], I know it's about interoperability, but WordPress looks like the most mature, turn-key option for implementing all the features.

#[tantek]It's not the most turnkey. There's plenty of config / admintax with WordPress, enough to discourage anyone who has only had experience with traditional social media
#[tantek]I would say #indieweb-known is also more turnkey (more feature built in, less need for any plugins) than WordPress
TravelingAlien and gRegor joined the channel
#[tantek]If you're curious to explore WordPress more I highly recommend checking out and reading a few days of backscroll in #indieweb-wordpress which does have quite a few very supportive folks in it who can help out!
#Kolev[tantek], I worry that the other options are less versatile than WordPress.
#[tantek]If versatility is your top priority there are plenty other #indieweb-dev centered solutions besides WordPress, like various generators for static sites
#aaronpk"versatility" and "turnkey" sound like exact opposite goals
#[tantek]Kolev, you're always going to be missing features because the web (and software and services for it) is never "complete"
#[tantek]I discourage a completionist mindset and instead start with "what do you want to do with your site?" and make a top 10 list of specific use-cases for YOU and then evaluate which options support how many of those use-cases.
#[tantek]for self-hosting, I definitely recommend further conversation in #indieweb-dev
