Moult
casts a vote for a static site.
#
Moult
and if you know a bit of code, write your own static site generator. don't use someone elses. it's really, really easy to do a little bit of templating, and read from markdown or json or similar.
#
[qubyte]
That’s pretty much exactly what I do, so seconded.

Kolev
Moult, what about IndieAuth, POSSE, PESOS, backfeed, etc?
#
Moult
Kolev: what about it?
#
Kolev
Moult, seems like those things cannot be done with just a static site generator.
#
Moult
Kolev: why not?
#
[qubyte]
I do it. 🤷
#
[snarfed]
they're harder, but still possible
#
[qubyte]
With the aide of things like build scripts and “serverless” functions, granted, but those are fairly common for static site hosts. I’ve been thinking of moving stuff that gets posted to just to a little raspberry pi or something since they’re so rarely called.
#
Loqi
hey Kolev [qubyte]: we try to keep jargon (site generator, static site generator, serverless) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
[qubyte]
Oops, sorry!
#
Kolev
Oh, I didn't know this was the base channel...
#
Moult
is Loqi a bot?
#
gRegor
what is loqi?

anybody here have a gemini capsule?
#
Moult
Kolev: reading your website, no cars eh? no kids either?
#
Kolev
Moult, I'm not opposed to having kids. I am opposed to cars.
#
Moult
Kolev: merely an observation that there's a correlation with car use and kids :)
#
Kolev
Moult, I think it's harmful to design our towns so that kids need to be shuttled around in cars.
#
Moult
Kolev: agreed, but alas that's reality right now
#
Kolev
Moult, pedestrian-first towns are beneficial for the whole family, not just single people.

what is on-topic on this channel anyway
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "on-topic on this channel anyway" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "on-topic on this channel anyway is ____", a sentence describing the term)

#
Loqi
what is is how you can ask me to look to see if there’s documentation about a topic on the wiki, and if not, I’ll give you a URL to click to create a page on the wiki accordingly! https://indieweb.org/what_is
#
capjamesg[d]
We're sensitive to keeping channels on topic because we have had people in the past feel discouraged about, for example, lots of technical talk in this channel (which is supposed to be about making things on your site, not coding).

So what is this channel for, if you can't talk about making websites on it?
#
[mattl]
dev is about development, events is for events, meta is about the http://indieweb.org website/infrastructure, stream is basically RSS feeds in the channel... so this channel is about using the indieweb.
#
[tantek]
what is the indieweb channel for?
#
[tantek]
oh yeah, no trailing prepos right
#
[tantek]
what is the purpose of the indieweb channel
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "purpose of the indieweb channel" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "purpose of the indieweb channel is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
purpose of the indieweb channel is /discuss#indieweb
#
[mattl]
maybe the channel would make more immediate sense if it was called lobby or something..
#
[tantek]
Kolev, there you go
#
[tantek]
[mattl] -> #indieweb-meta
#
Kolev
Anyway, I'm really impressed by POSSE and IndieAuth.
#
Kolev
Really own all your stuff.
#
[tantek]
That's the goal!
#
[tantek]
what is own your data?
#
Loqi
✊ own your data is an IndieWeb principle with two key parts: 1) your data lives primarily under your own domain, and 2) you are able to retain your access over time https://indieweb.org/own_your_data
#
Kolev
BTW, I'm here because of Snikket and JMP.
#
[mattl]
A big shakeup like the mass exodus of Twitter is a good time for people to reconsider that stuff too.
#
[snarfed]
including making web sites!
#
[mattl]
what is snikket
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "snikket" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "snikket is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[snarfed]
just not necessarily _coding_ websites
#
Kolev
[mattl], not to go off topic, but Snikket is about taking ownership of your chats, basically. No more silos for chat.
#
[mattl]
snikket is an open source self hosted chat server
#
[mattl]
Kolev: you're using it, I presume?
#
Kolev
[mattl], I'm using Snikket to talk to you right now, yes.
#
[mattl]
perfect. can you help flesh out the wiki page for it? make a list of IndieWeb users and include yourself and a space for others.
[Joe_Crawford] joined the channel
#
Kolev
[mattl], I'm not sure Snikket is really part of the IndieWeb, though. It's just another component of the self-hosting movement. Also, I don't have my own domain, so I can't log in yet.
#
[mattl]
Left a note in dev for you 🙂
