[Murray]
hi @vuilhund ๐Ÿ‘‹ Depends what you mean, but there's some useful info on the Getting Started page. There's also a bot (Loqi) that you can query for information, like this
#
[Murray]
what is Getting Started
#
Loqi
๐ŸŽ‰ Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/getting_started
#
[Murray]
what is the IndieWeb
#
Loqi
The IndieWeb is a community of independent and personal websites based on the principles of: owning your domain and using it as your primary online identity, publishing on your own site first (optionally elsewhere), and owning your content https://indieweb.org/indieweb
#
[Murray]
^ some hopefully useful info there. If you have any more specific questions, feel free to drop them in chat. Oh, and speaking of which
#
[Murray]
what is chat
#
Loqi
chat is informal messaging offered by numerous services, a few of which interoperate or bridge with each other, and also a set of brainstorms for what an amazing indieweb friendly chat web app/site could do https://indieweb.org/chat
#
[Murray]
ah nope, sorry, wrong page

I am currently making a new website and I'm using neocities if you know what that is would you say its reliable and good to make a website?
#
[Murray]
Yep, there are quite a few people around here that use/have used Neocities. I've not used it myself, but it seems to be pretty stable and decent
#
[Murray]
what is neocities
#
Loqi
NeoCities is a free website hosting silo in the spirit of defunct silo GeoCities (Yahoo shutdown in 2009) that looks like a stepping stone to getting started on the IndieWeb https://indieweb.org/NeoCities
#
[Murray]
^ some more specific info on that page ๐Ÿ™‚
#
vuilhund
will read!
#
[Murray]
it's a bit sparse, but the tl;dr is: should be a great way to get involved in the web and start creating your own presence
#
vuilhund
I've already somewhat coded my website, the thing is its just everywhere which is good but I wanna focus it on like one thing but it be about me at the same time is what I have a problem with
#
[Murray]
how much to segment or split a site is a constant topic of discussion ๐Ÿ˜„ all I can add is: it's your site, you can do what you like with it, but consider what the main *purpose* might be/what problem you're trying to get it to solve (if there are any; no worries if there aren't!)
#
[Murray]
lots of folks have issues between wanting their site to be a personal portfolio (and therefore potentially being useful for a career) vs somewhere to just experiment and be fully themselves. I can't say there's a right/wrong answer to that; everyone strikes their own balance
#
[Murray]
what is context switching
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "context switching" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "context switching is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[Murray]
ah well, just a thought ๐Ÿ˜…
#
[Murray]
I'm sure some of the prior discussion is documented somewhere...
#
capjamesg[d]
Welcome to the community!
#
vuilhund
I think I'll experiment for now since im still learning
#
[Murray]
definitely my preferred option ๐Ÿ˜
#
vuilhund
what is mostly used on websites ( like guestbooks, blinkies, etc (stuff like that))
#
[Murray]
I know Neocities tends to lean towards a "retro" aesthetic, with things like guestbooks, ticker counters, and badges. The web in general is a bit broader, but something that a lot of folks around here have fun experimenting with are "slash pages"
#
[Murray]
what are slash pages
#
Loqi
page is short for web page on the IndieWeb, and is usually primarily known by its name and kept updated in place in contrast to posts which are primarily datetime-based; a page that is browser-editable with viewable revisions is a wiki-page https://indieweb.org/slash_pages
#
[Murray]
stuff like a `/now` page etc. Lots of examples here: https://slashpages.net/
#
[Murray]
Or, if you're looking for lots of inspiration, https://personalsit.es/ is a good collection
#
vuilhund
these look nice, still thinking about the aesthetic I wanna go for with all this inspiration lol
#
awwkie
Biggest downside tho is that someday it could go away just as geocities did. So be aware of that
#
awwkie
vuilhund: I am hosting my site on neocities! : )
#
awwkie
I've had a really good experience so far, and if you're looking for a place to start it's great, since you get a lot from the free option.

Overall, it's great for personal sites. Especially if you want to interact with other users. Again just be aware that it might be gone at some point in the future, which is why many people choose not to use silos! : )
#
awwkie
There are a lot of pros to using neocities, tho. For example it has an explore functionality that let's you browse other neocities sites by tags or last updated. Which is great because it can be hard sometimes for independent websites to get traffic. It also lets you "follow" other sites so you get a notification when they get updated, and you can leave comments on them.

hi Indieweb folks! Iโ€™m a longtime wordpress user (and former wordpress developer) trying to get rolling with Indieweb + bridgy (to crosspost social notes to Mastodon & Bluesky), but so far both my efforts (10-12 hours each time) have sent me back to Jetpack social.
#
[Alexandra_Samu]
I would love to give an indieweb setup another try but Iโ€™m worried about losing myself down a rabbit hole of tech troubleshooting.
#
[Alexandra_Samu]
Can I ask what a typical getting-started time commitment looks like for people whoโ€™ve done this via self-hosted wordpress?
#
[Alexandra_Samu]
For context on where Iโ€™m stuck: So far I canโ€™t even get authorization headers past wpengine (my host) despite their efforts to fix my permissions setupโ€ฆ.and the kind David Shankse was surprised that nginx (which is what my install runs on) has posed any obstacles to authorization at all.
#
[Murray]

Does Wikipedia (or other sites) provide citations or credits for audio clips? I think the "references" section is used only for footnote citations, like the kind you'd put in an academic paper.
#
[tantek]
the references section is built from whatever people use <ref> tags for in the article content
#
btrem
Right, so credits for an audio clip would not appear there (unless it had a footnote). So Wiki doesn't have a credits section for such things?
