Anyone know of a directory to find where you can purchase a specific book DRM-free?
#
Lars-Christian
All I can find are articles or listings of stores that offer DRM free e-books. But I don't want to check X different stores if they have the book I'm looking for.

Lars-Christian, i know some sites that list where you could buy a book, like wordcat, but not sure about drm-free. why not remove the drm from the ebook yourself ?
#
Lars-Christian
Thanks @sebbu. I already do that. But I reckon there's something in the terms that I'm in breaching by removing the DRM. It's not a problem, per se, but it would be nice to be fully on the right side of everything.

Lars-Christian: if buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't theft ;)
#
Lars-Christian
Hah, I'm inclined to agree with that in principle. But I'm not sure it would hold up in a court of law if the terms explicitly prohibit it.
#
Lars-Christian
Although typing that out, I'm reminded of the story about the Wandersail from the Stormlight books.

i know 7switch.com (previously immateriel.fr) doesn't do drm, but it's in french
#
sebbu
https://standardebooks.org/ doesn't do drm either, but you probably won't find your book on it
#
sebbu
(but it has a nice manual on how to make an epub, which is a reference)

Thanks @sebbu Was familiar with Standard Ebooks. Great resource!

Sounds like a project _someone_ should pick up... A searchable books database with links to where you can purchase specific books without DRM.
#
sebbu
i know such project, but for printed, rentable or ebook versions, not specifically no-drm
#
sebbu
like worldcat which i cited previously, there are others

DRM is decided by the publisher, nearly all books released will feature DRM, but some are easier to crack (Kobo) than others (Kindle)
#
sebbu
i remember cracking some ebooks i had rented at a library, was pretty easy too (it was using adobe digital edition)
#

Afaik most platforms do bear minimum in terms of DRM, the only ones absolutely hell bent on locking people into their platform is Amazon.

One for [snarfed] or any other Bridgy expert: My automatic, Webmention-based POSSE-posts to BlueSky don't seem to be passing along any of the illustration or summary information in my posts' OpenGraph tags. I *suspect* this is due to Bridgy abbreviating article-link URLs with ellipses instead of passing em straight in, but I'm not positive. Example of what I mean: https://jmac.org/misc/bridgy-question.png

Is there some way I can tune either my Bridgy account or my own posts (the microformats of which I have complete control) to make this work more like I want?

jmac the link preview on Mastodon there is generated by Mastodon, not Bridgy
#
[snarfed]
Bridgy classic doesn't consume OGP or other metadata at all
#
jmac
Indeed! But I don't know why Bluesky (this is Bluesky, not Mastodon) makes the preview for my hand-pasted post, and not the Bridgy-posted one that has the same link in it
#
[snarfed]
ah, because the Bluesky _client_ generates that preview, not the server
#
[snarfed]
link previews for Bluesky would be a good feature request for Bridgy classic!
#
jmac
Hearing "Bridgy Classic" reminds me that Bridgy New Flavor also exists so I am trying that for the first time. And possibly setting up an extremely ill advised solution that involves both

OK, I'm trying to suss out Bridgy fed now! I made https://bsky.app/profile/jmac.masto.nyc.ap.brid.gy, hurrah! Then I made a Mastodon post, which shows up at posted on https://fed.brid.gy/ap/@jmac@masto.nyc, whoo! Buuuut the post isn't visible on https://bsky.app/profile/jmac.masto.nyc.ap.brid.gy. Did I miss a step?

I see that clicking the "N minutes ago" hyperlink about my post on https://fed.brid.gy/ap/@jmac@masto.nyc returns "No log found!" so I wonder if I might have jumped the gun a bit here

#
[snarfed]
oh sorry, you're going the other direction
#
jmac
Yeah, it appeared some minutes after my messages here. I've posted two more and set a ten-minute timer to see if they'll show up too.
#
jmac
Dang, haha, it federated that one message from half an hour and that's all so far. Does it work on a queued delay
#
jmac
? (which, totally fine if so!)
#
[snarfed]
ah, sorry, not a queued delay, no, it's usually only seconds to tens of seconds, but yeah we're backed up a bit right now
#
jmac
No problem! Another post snuck through in the meantime. I'm happy it's here at all!
