What brings you here?
#

Welcome 👋
#
augustmurka
Oh I just got recommended a video about indieweb, and, before watching it, I decided to google what is it
#
augustmurka
which brought me to the website
#
augustmurka
which brought me here
#
capjamesg
Do you have a personal website?
#
augustmurka
no, I don't think so
#
jeremycherfas
That's a pretty good reason. :)
#
augustmurka
I'm not sure I understand how it all works even
#
augustmurka
I'm not too smart in things related to computers, I'm not going to lie
#
[tantek]
cool! which video?
#
augustmurka
this one? I haven't watched it yet soon
#
augustmurka
[edit] this one? I haven't watched it yet though
#
augustmurka
I just got curious

You may appreciate https://neocities.org/. There is a big community of creative personal websites to explore on there.

#

The essence of the indie web is using your personal website to express yourself online, whatever that means for you.
#
capjamesg
Whether that is blogging, designing web pages, sharing pixel art -- whatever you want to do!
#
augustmurka
I suppose there isn't any network to those websites, is there?
#
augustmurka
like how, uhm, the social media accs are connected in a network
#
augustmurka
those need to be found individually?
#
augustmurka
I'm not sure I understand how that part works
#
capjamesg
The web is the network!
#
capjamesg
They do sort of need to be found, but there are lots of sites out there that list personal sites to explore.

I think Neocities has some level of network discovery available too, but lots of those sites will belong to things like webrings and will post blog rolls, which operate in a similar way
#
capjamesg
Neocities is one. https://blogroll.org/ is another.
#
capjamesg

#
shbst
hmmm, that video brings up an interesting point; how people like reading about pages but people don't like writing them.
#
augustmurka
I think I'm just not old enough to remember "personal blogs" or they just went pass me somehow, I'm sorry, I feel so embarrassed
#
shbst
augustmurka: yeah basically. There's no social graph by default. Normally you'd broadcast your website in a email sig or link to via profiles on other websites
#
augustmurka
capjamesg[d]: oooh so it recommends certain blogs?
#
capjamesg
That's okay! Everyone has different experiences of the web!
#
capjamesg
augustmurka[d]: Yeah! It's run by the person who does the People and Blogs series at https://peopleandblogs.com

#
capjamesg
That's another site to find cool websites ^
#
augustmurka
Also I'm not really sure, but, I suppose owning a website comes with some sort of fee to keep it running?
#
shbst
you can do it for free these days.
#
capjamesg
It can cost money depending on how you run your website. A lot of people use Neocities because it has a good free plan that lets you host lots of pages.
#
[Murray]
Neocities has a free tier, for instance 🙂
#
shbst
you can get a domain name from somewhere like afraid.org
#
capjamesg
Neocities will give you a site like yourusernamehere.neocities.org that you can share with people.
#
shbst
and host it via github.
#
shbst
there's too many possibilities to list
#
augustmurka
oh hell I should've got a bit more sleep today
#
augustmurka
my brain is so slow
#
augustmurka
So you create an account on neocites and it gives you an opportunity to write a code for your website? But with some sort of features only available to paying members&

#
capjamesg
Haha no worries. I could have used some more sleep too 😂
#
capjamesg
Exactly. You can write code for your website and host it on the web for free, and some features are paid if you want them.
#
jeremycherfas
I got plenty of sleep last night, but my braincase still feels like it is full of marbles today.
#
augustmurka
I've never really been smart with computers, a life with a programmer in my family has successfully sheltered me from any interactions beyond scrolling through youtube
#
augustmurka
jeremycherfas: I feel you
#
augustmurka
capjamesg[d]: and what is indie web then? does it provide same things as neocities or something like that?
#
capjamesg
Neocities is one place to make web sites. But the indie web is the idea that anyone should be able to make a website that's their own home on the web.
#
capjamesg
Some people here, for example, use WordPress to run their site; others made theirs all by hand.
#
augustmurka
so its like a project that shares information about those different places where you can build yourself a website?
#
capjamesg
The indie web is for the idea that you shouldn't need to rely on social media, etc. You can make your own home on the web that's not controlled by a big company.
#
capjamesg
augustmurka[d]: Yeah! And a place where people chat about websites too.
#
augustmurka
I've got really tired from social networks and I don't really have anything except for youtube (I really love long live inspo videos where people go through their day) and instagram (to be in touch with what people I know are up to)
#
[Murray]
there are also frequent events run by the community ‒ both online and IRL ‒ where you can get help with web stuff
#
augustmurka
I deleted tiktok about a month ago or so and I feel super happy about that
#
capjamesg
I got tired from social media too. That's one of the big reasons I have a website!
#
capjamesg
I like that there's community around websites without the pressure to like/subscribe/post all the time.
#
augustmurka
[Murray]: yeah I think I will need that because I am a really slow learner and don't know anything about coding at all, total, most ultimate zero
#
augustmurka
capjamesg[d]: yeah it feels terrifying
#
augustmurka
that's one of the reasons I don't join discord servers most of the time too because it feels like if you don't write there for extended amount of time a lot of messages will pile up and people will forget you existed
#
[Murray]
yeah, we're missing some really "simple" ways to get into web coding these days. Back when I started, lots of the social stuff online was forums, blog platforms like Blogger, and the first social sites like MySpace. And almost all of them had easy initial set up, and then you could customise them a little with web coding
#
capjamesg
You might like https://htmlforpeople.com/zero-to-internet-your-first-website/ as a tutorial to learn HTML, the coding language used to make websites.

[edit] You might like https://htmlforpeople.com/zero-to-internet-your-first-website/ as a tutorial to learn HTML, the coding language used to make websites.
#
[Murray]
I guess Tumblr is still that to some degree, and sites like Neocities help, but it does feel like a steeper learning curve these days
#
capjamesg
That tutorial also shows off a bit of Neocities so you'll both learn how to make a website and put it on the web.
#
augustmurka
[Murray]: omg yeeesss! I used to have a customized tumblr when I was like.. urgh, 13? I don't even know how I did that
#
augustmurka
the same way as I used to make attempts to create my visual novel when I was like 10 or so, but that was through renpy, so there wasn't much "coding"
#
augustmurka
capjamesg[d]: I'll check this out right now!
#
augustmurka
oh yes, I will definitely check that out later, I see its like a full beginner guide?
#
augustmurka
I'm saving that up because I have somewhere to be soon
#
capjamesg
augustmurka[d]: Yep!
#
capjamesg
If you need help at any point feel free to post here!
#
augustmurka
thank you very much! <3
#
augustmurka
oh!!!!! And I have a little server, I was wondering if I could post a link there so that people can come here if they have any personal website-related questions
#
augustmurka
or would that not be thoughtful? I'm not sure
#
[Murray]
I'd say that's probably fine; feel free to link to parts of the Wiki, as well
