My need for a Skype replacement is slightly different. The audio quality on Skype is really good if the caller disables automatic gain and so I use it to record interviews for my podcast if Factime is not an option. I haven’t yet tried the free version of Teams, but the paid version sucks for that, as does almost every other option.

[jeremycherfas]: did you need video or only audio?
#
doesnm
for only audio look mumble. For only screen sharing look at screego.net

I dont need video. (Aside: do people really watch podcasts on YouTube, where all you see is talking heads, as much as SEO spammers would have me believe?)
#

Mumble audio is good? Need to check it out again.
#
jeremycherfas
I was going to complain that nobody would install a client just to use Mumble on a single interview, and of course they wouldn't do that for Skype either. But a lot of people had Skype already because it was really good. Still is.

We tried mumble web for online HWC at some point. I think the best way I could say about it was that it worked. I do not fully remember if we actually got Mumble web to work well ... sknebel might be able to remind me
#
Zegnat
What is mumble?
#
Loqi
Mumble is open-source voice chat software, with clients available for both desktop and mobile, as well as web browsers https://indieweb.org/Mumble
#
Zegnat
mumble-web “is a bit fiddly” according to the page, but it looks like it might still be there :o

tbh not sure my hosted one still works, I think I might have killed mumble at some point
#
sknebel
and yeah, the web one was iffy
#
sknebel
but also underlying tech and browser APIs have hcanged a lot, I imagine today nicer solutions are possible
#
sknebel
e.g. for podcasting local recording on both ends makes sense, a website could do that nowadays
#
Zegnat
I imagine jeremycherfas would want a service that then does the local recording and sending it to him without having to separately instruct the podcast guests

nah I think that's for hosting, not recording
#
[snarfed]
there are a ton of web-based podcast recording studio apps. Riverside, Anchor, Spotify has one, etc
#
[snarfed]
...but we may want to take discussion to #indieweb-random

On Mac I've used QuickTime Player to make a local recording alongside the Zoom chat - that's what On The Media suggested.
#
jeremycherfas
And a very good suggestion, to someone who knows what they are doing. On the other hand, if someone has a Mac, they almost always have Facetime too.

i didn't even know there was an r/indieweb
#
[fluffy]
It’s super inactive
#
doesnm
lol it can't be viewed from web. Ok, alt frontends time
#
[fluffy]
You have to be signed in I think
#
[fluffy]
Maybe joined?
#
[fluffy]
Which is of course the real reason why the sub is dead, nothing to do with IndieWeb itself
#
doesnm
[fluffy]: i don't have account in reddit. Why i should use silos?
#
[fluffy]
I mean I agree
#
[snarfed]
you don't have to be logged in to read it. doesnm maybe you mean it can't be viewed without JS?
#
Zegnat
Interesting, I did not get that pop-up browsing to it on desktop.
#
Zegnat
But I do get it on my phone ... it really is just to push you to the mobile app it seems
#
Zegnat
doesnm: my tip for if you ever want to access reddit on a mobile device, switch it to old.reddit.com e.g. https://old.reddit.com/r/indieweb
#
Zegnat
That gets rid of a lot of those pushes

> Thanks for the link to the news page, I did nor know that. indieweb.org itself was one reason why I was asking about the state of 'the IndieWeb' since the page does not give the impressio of being updated regularly and most content seems rather old -- and some of it not too well curated, to be honest.
#
osteophage
Anyone have thoughts on which pages should be updated?

[snarfed]
Hmm no they have a separate prompt to push you to the app. Interesting that that one is phone-only
#
Zegnat
[snarfed]: the “view in app” button feels like a push to the app to me ;) Though it is weird that unreviewed content somehow becomes OK when viewed in their app
#
doesnm
Zegnat: redlib is better choice for me
#
Zegnat
yes, if you know of alternative front-ends, and have a hosted instance that is live, you can use that too
