What is OSA?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "OSA" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "OSA is ____", a sentence describing the term)

What is the online safety act?

#
[KevinMarks]
That's a Wikipedia redirect though
#
[KevinMarks]
I wanted to link to this explanation, but I suppose I need to edit the wiki first https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/age-verification-whats-the-harm/
#
capjamesg
That is a well-written article.

[KevinMarks] perhaps add it to the Wikipedia article unless you really think it has indieweb specific relevance?

for the subset of us who run services here, IFTAS's article is useful: https://about.iftas.org/2025/07/30/navigating-the-uk-online-safety-act/

#

What is the indieweb?
#
Loqi
The IndieWeb is a community of independent and personal websites based on the principles of: owning your domain and using it as your primary online identity, publishing on your own site first (optionally elsewhere), and owning your content https://indieweb.org/indieweb
#
capjamesg
That page is a good place to start ^^
#
mathium05
Also I was looking to flesh out one of your articals but I can't figure out how to login

#
mathium05
[edit] I can't really modify the HTML of my website under my domain like that too easily
#
mathium05
*like that
#
mathium05
Cause I use cloudflare pages for hosting, and I don't have a good way to inject anything in
#
mathium05
Is there a way to use a TXT DNS record instead?

mathium05[d]: as the code behind it is hosted in multiple places
#
mathium05
(FOSS project that I host :P)
#
capjamesg
The IndieWeb wiki is a bit unique from others in that you have to sign in with your domain name.
#
mathium05
I have a domain name
#
capjamesg
At minimum you can add a link to your home page like <a href="youremail@example.com" rel="me"></a>. This will then allow the wiki to see your email and send you an email verification.
#
[snarfed]
mathium05 interesting question. IndieAuth doesn't support DNS, but I wonder if an HTTP Link header in the response would work? eg for setting rel=indieauth-metadata to point to a login provider like http://indielogin.com
#
capjamesg
The rel=me says that you own the email, so when you sign in and verify your email you are also verifying that you own the domain. This will log you in with your domain.
#
[snarfed]
oh also we should take this to #indieweb-dev
#
mathium05
I can't really modify the HTML or HTTP headers
#
Loqi
mathium05: we try to keep jargon (FOSS, headers) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
mathium05
Yeah
#
mathium05
Sure
jak2k and CrimeWave joined the channel
#
[tantek]
the wiki requires you to sign-in with your website which you are assumed to control
#
[tantek]
not being able to modify the HTML doesn't sound like having control of your website 🤷
#
mathium05
I have complete control of it
#
mathium05
It's just that multiple people host my website
#
mathium05
So if I modify the HTML, it'd change for everyone, and I really don't think the others would want that (though I don't really think they'd care :P)

#
[tantek]
this "if I modify the HTML, it'd change for everyone, and I really don't think the others would want that" doesn't sound like a personal website, it sounds like a group website
#
[tantek]
the key here is that a personal website represents you and your identity, different from any products, companies, services etc. that you work on or make. project websites are great! we love indie project websites too! important to recognize their difference from personal websites
#
[snarfed]
I also don't really understand why there would be multiple instances of this site, with the same HTML, that different people host. if this is the site for the Fermi chat app, it seems like you'd only want/need one instance of it, right?
#
[snarfed]
...that's less important though
revi and barnaby joined the channel
#
mathium05
Yeah, there used to be a point
#
mathium05
Where I didn't have an official instance
#
mathium05
But now
#
mathium05
I don't know why it happens
#
mathium05
People keep wanting to do it
#
mathium05
There's only one I understand rn, which is one not hosted with cloudflare
#
mathium05
which makes sense for those unable to access through cloudflare
#
mathium05
It's not like you'd gain anything from self hosting it unless you wanted stricter CORS, as there's a cross-instance account switcher
