[tantek][snarfed] it's making sense for me, as a writer, both as a shorter form than "https://" and as a way of indicating I'm referring to an actual "entity" (person, org, etc.) rather than just a random domain/link. IMO it's also much more readable as "plain text" since Twitter educated the planet about @-mentions.
[tantek]anything else, e.g. whether or not the @-mentioned domain accepts webmentions is an incremental "bonus" on top of the easier to write / easier to read advantage IMO
