alright I'm leaning towards "-->" as the best among a small number of choices for delimiting items in a one line linear timeline: https://indieweb.org/microsyntax#one_line_timeline_or_progress. I think it most looks like an actual arrow graphic and help separate the items on the timeline so they appear as clear separate things / steps

Looks good. I love the Unicode arrow myself, use it all the time
#
[Al_Abut]
Is there a downside in an ascii kind of way to use special characters like that? I’d assume they have the same difficulty as an emoji

[tantek]
the unicode arrows don't visually separate what's on either side enough which makes it harder to read/scan
#
[tantek]
probably also need to test various options with screen readers
#
[tantek]
The nice thing about "-->" is that it is very unlikely it's something other than an arrow, and can be easily typed e.g. on mobile.
#
[tantek]
next challenge is to figure out what a good HTML+CSS presentation would be but that's more of a #indieweb-dev chat

Hope this is alright to share! The Emerging Writers Festival in Melbourne, Australia is running currently. As part of it, they're doing a digital exhibition called How To Fall In Love With The Internet Again. I'd say there are some great pieces, but I guess I'm biased, because I wrote an essay for it too. https://emergingwritersfestival.org.au/how-to-fall-in-love-with-the-internet-again/

does anyone have an 8-bit theme on their site or has had one ?
#
paperbritt
No, but if I find the energy one day I'd love to get some sort of light mode, dark mode, 8 bit mode switcher sorted out.
#
[tantek]
what is 8bitday
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "8bitday" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "8bitday is ____", a sentence describing the term)

I do enjoy landing on a site with an 8-bit theme
#
[tantek]
please share next time you land on one!
#
[tantek]
also different from terminal/green
#
gRegor
Kind of related, I loved finding out that the Indianapolis mutual aid site is 1) on neocities 2) retro themed: https://ccma.neocities.org/
#
[tantek]
aciccarello, we are talking 8-bit rather than "simply" terminal green right?
#
[tantek]
what is terminal green?
#
Loqi
terminal green is both a specific shade of green (#4AF262) and a design aesthetic based on that or a similar bright green on black (usually monospace) text as a nod to 20th century green phosphorous monochrome computer terminals, used on a few personal sites, and sometimes as a site theme, or a temporary blog theme https://indieweb.org/terminal_green
#
[aciccarello]
Yeah, but my memory is vauge. I think I'm also remembering some sites that made use of monospace fonts which often wouldn't be considered 8-bit.
#
gRegor
I usually think of pixel art and pixelated fonts/images
#
[tantek]
1970s << terminal green
#
[tantek]
yeah 8-bit theming is decidedly a 1980s vibe, while terminal green aesthetic, monospace inverted text (what folks today call "dark mode" lol) is a 1970s reference (whether intended or not)
#
gRegor
Someone from HWC whose name is escaping me... I saw they had a pixealted, kinda D&D themed site
#
[tantek]
8-bit vs 1-bit 🙂
#
gRegor
it's gonna bug me until I find it now haha
#
[tantek]
ooh, pixelated D&D themed sounds like original/early Ultima
#
gRegor
I think it was on HWC EU and also was a m.b site (or used m.b for part of it). Sound familiar, capjamesg?
#
capjamesg
I can picture it but I can't remember the name.
#
capjamesg
It had a brown background.
#
[tantek]
was it linked in the notes from that HWC EU?
#
capjamesg
Likely but we're going back months.
#
gRegor
I've been poking around notes
#
capjamesg
Found it!!!
#
gRegor
different one than I'm thinking of, but also cool!
#
capjamesg
Oh haha
#
capjamesg
I'm not sure then.
#

I love how many creative sites people have!

#
gRegor
Yes, too many sites, good problem to have :)
#
[tantek]
definitely giving WML / Palm Pilot vibes [artlung]
#
[tantek]
what is pixelated
#
Loqi
pixelated is in the context of the IndieWeb a reference to the use of pixelated images for a variety or reasons like privacy, and a way to blur potentially arbitrary images received from external sources https://indieweb.org/pixelated
#
[tantek]
^ maybe worth expanding that dfn/page to include "pixelated theming" ?
