what is Retro
#
Loqi
The 1990s was a decade that saw the invention and growth of the web, dominated by independent websites, as well as nascent silos like Geocities, with a particular brightly colored and often translucent design aesthetic that would come to define the era along with under construction graphics, dancing animals, site counters, ornate backgrounds, and guest books https://indieweb.org/retro

I like the indieweb. It feels like a skills guild from a video game somehow, maybe a cyperpunk RPG
#
[morganm]
cyberpunk* but no specific RPG game comes to mind, just a skills guild feeling

[morgan_indiewe] ooo, that’s a fun way to put it. I looked up “skills guild” and got this description:

I'm wondering if you lovely folks could suggest an easy/convienent way to get files from one device to another? I used to use slack direct messages but since I use Discord now, I can't direct message myself. And emailing myself is a pain. Something I could use with my family and is cross-platform? Or even a self-hosted thing that temporarily stores files at a link? I have a server I can deploy stuff on. Much appreciated!

@ zachary.kai I've honestly reverted to USB sticks for this 😄 Now that most things are on USB-C, I just need a handful dotted around, and that's that. For direct transfers, cables are at most work stations too. The only other option (beyond email) that I've relayed on is AirDroid, but I haven't needed it in so long it isn't even installed on my phone any more
#
[Murray]
(I realise you were probably looking for software solutions, but they've all been more hassle than drag'n'drop imo)
#
zachary.kai
Fair enough! Thanks for letting me know, and yes, you're probably right. I have a stick I could use!
#
earthbasetwo
cloud files service probably the easiest. then you can send ppl public links
#
earthbasetwo
if you have privacy concerns, icloud has permissions based on apple accounts. im sure dropbox and others have password protection also
#
earthbasetwo
self-hosting cloud services is definitely a thing (NextCloud e.g.) but that is absolutely going to be non-trivial work to set up, especially with any authentication

idk what your server setup is, but you could consider just dropping the files in a directory that your web server serves. and you could use http auth there, which is not fancy but its super easy to set up e.g. if you're using nginx or something
#
Loqi
hey earthbasetwo, it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (cloud services, nginx)

(but yeah usb is prob the best option if you are physically near ppl)
#

i guess my rec for self-transfers is icloud or dropbox or something. i use icloud, its easy
#
zachary.kai
True! Tnank you for that.

Dropbox free plan was the first service that I was able to get family to do buy in on. For limited size items, always free tier. Apple has been okay at this now in iCloud but rapidly seems to hit space limits which then require ongoing payment. I suspect GDrive is the best cheap choice for most purpose if you have to get buy in from nontechnical folks. 😞

zachary.kai
Thank you for that! And yes, cloud services seem the best option.

zachary.kai, re: quick file transfer, i've used discord the same way you used to with slack! if you start a new DM group, but don't add anyone, it'll make a group with just you

Haven't used it myself yet, but the rec I've seen before is Filegarden. https://filegarden.com/ For stuff I can do in person I'm still using USB sticks though.
