[Sophia_wood] I'd like to hop in on that - feels cathartic - her we go: substack--

[schmarty] substack-- for many reasons. _but_ it is pretty unique in that they do provide an exit. one can leave substack with all of their subscriber data _and_ roll over recurring subscriber payments onto your own stripe account.
#
[schmarty] they support bringing your own custom domain and even sending email from that domain, which means you can set up the whole experience somewhere else, with all your data
#
[schmarty] that checks a lot of own-your-identity and own-your-domain boxes. but also, undeniably, i really dislike substack as a company and network!

dibblethewrecker [tantek]: Very sad. I work at a small UK not-for-profit and our web traffic from Google has absolutely tanked - down a third year-on-year. It's nuts.

ohhelloana dibblethewrecker[d] same here. I work mostly for charities and traffic has tanked immensely. It's been really hard.

[artlung] along the lines of longevity, 30-years of flickr pro was auctioned off. $3500 is what it went for. https://event.auctria.com/8fe5c5cc-6ddb-405f-a673-49b417c09134/?event=item&target=c65dfa96-3659-48d5-872a-098dd37a89aa&data=c65dfa96-3659-48d5-872a-098dd37a89aa

Loqi Longevity is the goal of keeping your online presence, data, and code as future-friendly and future-proof as possible; it is one of the indieweb principles https://indieweb.org/longevity

[social] I have been slowly making my way through my physical book collection and putting them into Obsidian and use metadata and backlinking to more easily find things.

Loqi [indienews] New post: "Cycles And Fluctuations" https://hacdias.com/2025/11/04/cycles-and-fluctuations/
#
[Al_Abut] Hell yeah! I’d love to talk books and physical trackers of any kind, that would be such a fun discussion. I bet we could scope creep it to include zines and other DIY printed media too, those are super amenable to personal sites.

yellowbilledmagpie Hi everyone, I am a musician/educator with a newfound special hobby interest in online privacy, web dev, and making cool weird websites. I don't have much coding experience other than basic html skills from my myspace days (lol) but I am excited to learn and contribute to the indieweb movement in whatever way I can.

[Al_Abut] [tantek] I like to go broad in scope for the discussion part on day 1 because I know I’m going to scope my own stuff down on day two anyway. Otherwise you miss interesting gems.
#
[Al_Abut] Like if I had skipped the discussion at the photo session in Berlin and just built what I already had in mind before the weekend started, I would’ve made yet another gallery instead of prototyping out a solution for the mobile upload use case.
#
[Al_Abut] You can get even more rigorous about zooming in vs out, like with the double diamond:
#
[Al_Abut] It’s also a good way to avoid unintended conflict that sometimes happens when people are brainstorming. Two of the most common ways are when you’re critiquing, but someone wants generative creativity, and the other is when they’re trying to go broad to cover a problem set and you’re drilling down deep into solutioneering decision mode. The two are usually related.
#
[Al_Abut] Oops, just wrote a LinkedIn post, my bad.
#
[morganm] That's better than a LinkedIn post, as a newcomer I'd be like "hey there's some life here" so no apologies hehe
