Hello?
#
Ducminh
Anyone active?
#
Ducminh
Uhh
#
[morganm]
Welcome
#
Ducminh
So i just found this while trying to say fuck you with meta
#
[morganm]
Your in a good place. A lot of the focus around here is about having your own domain, and putting a website as part of doing that
#
Ducminh
Hello?
#
Ducminh
Oh ok so
#
Ducminh
But dats weird barely anyone chats in here
#
[morganm]
How long did you join? I think the main focus of the group is working on websites
#
[morganm]
Sometimes people are inclined to post here when they have an update on their website
#
Ducminh
Just here and just wait im washing the clothes
#
[morganm]
nice. relatable πŸ˜„
#
[morganm]
People use the chat to co-ordinate events and often post updates to their personal domains or websites, but sometimes it can get quiet around here πŸ™‚
#
[morganm]
I do remember when I joined via the web client to the chat initially it was really quiet, but there is life here I guess heh

Im afraid this place will be taken down by meta to keep people in facebook
#
[tantek]
Nah. They don't care
#
[tantek]
Stop worrying about meta. What's your personal website?
#
Ducminh
But remember theyre greedy as hell
#
[tantek]
Why do you care?
#
Ducminh
Yeah its quiet here im a little bored
#
[tantek]
If you have your own website you're never bored
#
[tantek]
If you don't then we can help you set one up!
#
Ducminh
Making websites welp i cannot cuz i ONLU HAVE THIS CRAPPY GALAXY S7
#
Ducminh
???
#
[morganm]
Just being friendly but honest, you are quite new and we are trying to figure out how serious you are. If you are serious, we can help you get up a website with a Galaxy S7
#
[morganm]
Its quite possible to do with a mobile device
#
Ducminh
Im not ready to set up a web yey
#
[morganm]
not as friendly but its possible
#
Ducminh
I mean yet
#
[morganm]
No worries. We can all share here some stories about how having a personal website has been fun or useful, its a big part of the group here, whenever you are ready
#

1:i dont wanna code

2:what can you do once set up own website
#
[morganm]
Ok, there are multiple hosted solutions for setting up a website with no or very minimal code. That limits your options for what you can do.
#
[morganm]
Your second question makes me think you should read https://indieweb.org
#
Ducminh
Like posting ideas for a game?
#
[morganm]
Sure?
#
[morganm]
Its your domain, post the ideas there πŸ™‚
#
Ducminh
Maybe for example:idea of porting doom to game boy?
#
[morganm]
I mean, sure πŸ™‚. Its on the Gameboy Advanced though already
#
Ducminh
Ah crap battery 1%
#
[morganm]
Good luck!

#
[morganm]
Thats no problem, we will keep on responding to your questions with answers because they are helpful for the group πŸ™‚
#
[morganm]
I had fun thinking about setting up a website with mobile only
#
[morganm]
https://home.omg.lol/ I wonder if its mobile-only possible...
#
Ducminh
Im too lazy to code
#
[morganm]
That limits your options. And some of the less-coding solutions aren't as Indieweb friendly.

there are plenty of indieweb-friendly web hosts that don't require any coding. http://micro.blog is a great one! and others too

[Trevor_Morris]: thanks for sharing this post on blogrolls. I've been thinking about if I was going to create one or not

All those reasons make it harder to update too. At what point do you add someone? Or what's the fallout for removing someone? And who knows if people you care about are feeling left out by omission

Maybe blogroll anxiety syndrome is a thing?
#
to2ds
I think Webmentions are an indirect way of having a blogroll without actually having a blogroll.
#
to2ds
A sort of blogroll by association.
#
to2ds
Especially if they’re aggregated on a separate page on your website.

A bookmarks page might also be considered an indirect blogroll.

My old blog had one. Never rebuilt it for my "new" blog
#
[tantek]
Because my old blog was month-based static files, I got to rebuild my blogroll from scratch each month so that provided an opportunity to trim as needed
#
[tantek]
These days I feel the risk of contributing to "insiderism" or people feeling left out is too high a cost to pay

I have been thinking a lot about my blogroll too. I rarely update the pages on my website and so my blogroll naturally falls out of date.
#

I love all the blogs on my blogroll right now but there are so many more that aren't on there.

I think it's really important to link to other blogs but having a blogroll is another thing to update so it doesn't always get the attention it deserves.
#
[tantek]
A long time ago I wrote up an "exits" page which was sort of like a curated site roll by categories and that was less stressful because as long as the sites had decent content I felt fine linking to it and didn't feel a need to keep to a short list

I wrote about my feelings on having a blogroll this morning after reading the ones posted in here. I'd been thinking about it, and it made the perfect topic for today. For me it's about the obligation it creates https://crystaltouchton.com/to-blogroll-or-not-to-blogroll/

I just did some testing of my own website. I removed some alt text from images that are decorative - there are some clouds in an optional animation and I just found it was reading out "Cloud, Cloud, Cloud" when I tested it! and added a skip-link to allow keyboard users or others to skip to main content faster and skip reading over the nav menu each time. That makes people like things better.
