oh, i consider there to be a pretty big difference between broadcasting a stream of photos like instagram vs curating albums and sharing with individual people. "share albums" sounds like the latter to me which threw me off.
#
[morgan]
I'm thrown off because I'm pretty sure Pixelfed is a clone thing you can run yourself, and run privately
#
[morgan]
So like there are differentiations here but basically as a user I want to figure out how to share photos to my mother in law who uses Instagram in a way that will be familiar and usable to her
#
[morgan]
I really like the idea of controlling my own service more and making sharing the photos to be a curated thing rather than some link to a Google photos album or something that uses any inbuilt cloud sharing feature
#
[snarfed]
you can definitely run your own Pixelfed instance!
#
[snarfed]
chances are, whatever you do, you'll need her to download and use a new/different app. if that's ok, then yeah she can use a fediverse client to look at a Pixelfed account, but she could also use a feed/social reader to look at a (possibly protected or unlisted) feed on your site, or other options
#
[morgan]
The end user experience I am looking for is basically a barely protected maybe with a password but not crawled gallery of photos, with a stretch goal of allowing comments. As a input user experience I want to shuffle the files into a folder and have it automatically synced with the instance of whatever it is I'm running. Basically I take a photo and put it in the folder on my device, she can view it at a hyperlink with something easy to click
#
[morgan]
through. If she can save the website to a home screen icon this seems like an acceptable level of complexity or novelty to impose on my elders
#
[morgan]
Long way of saying that Al has got me interested to learn more about photos !
#
[morgan]
I really do understand the desire to keep developer chat out to the other channel but basically I have questions about the user experience of the path I want to learn. Like I don't know anything about Jellyfin or Pixelfed in practical terms yet, I just have decided that this experience of sharing photos with my relatives is worth investing some kind of time into understanding. It's the main thing keeping me on a silo right now
#
[morgan]
It's got to be simple and not janky basically
#
[morgan]
The less custom and familiar it seems the better
#
[tantek]
sharing photos with a limited audience is very much a UX challenge
#
[tantek]
Flickr's "guest pass" feature is one possible solution
#
[morgan]
Flickr might be a better use of time than going down a custom route for this quest, but things are always evolving. If I go down a route with Jellyfin for music streaming I'll see if it can do photos too
#
[Al_Abut]
Happy to talk photos anytime, but I’m still confused why you’re not just sending her pictures directly. This sounds like over engineering to me if it’s just trying to send photos to one person.

[Al_Abut]
(says the guy that just spent 2+ weeks making a public photo album)

😆 🤦

#

that's why i was trying to get at the difference between sharing select photos with select people vs passively broadcasting to a chosen audience
#
[Al_Abut]
Exactly right
#
[Al_Abut]
I’m just thinking of seniors as a target audience. Not to be overly biased by a sample size of just my mom but I only recently found out that she didn’t know how to click on links that I’d text her.
#
[Al_Abut]
She thought the little social preview card with the open graph image was the entire message and wondered why the picture was so small.
#
[Al_Abut]
Also, just to lay my Pixelfed cards on the table, I don’t have any experience using the app to consume photos. I saw some kind of IG wannabe public feed of trending stuff as the default view and ran the other way instantly. I’m basically using it as a headless CMS and only use the app to create photos for me to use elsewhere.
#
[tantek]
I still think Sunlit is a good path for folks with Micropub support for that sort of thing

Over engineering is a good call out too. If it doesn't work or something is off about it then it's kinda your fault as a solo operator, and yet another thing to fix.

I really want to have a sync'd solution. And then I don't have to think about it too much, and it's separated. But Al might be right that just sending direct might be better to do generally

And keep updating it with new pics.

Hi there, I'm Naty and I have been slowly implementing bits of indieweb into my Hugo blog over the past few months. I decided to make a user wiki page today, hope I did it correctly. I only just saw that I should have said hi here first...
#
[morgan]
Welcome !
#
burgeonlab
Thanks Morgan. :)
#
[morgan]
The timeline design of your website is really cool
#
[morgan]
And I think I had a post on my blog a while ago that started "Hello Hugo" as well 😁
#
burgeonlab
Do you mean the yellow vertical date line on the Archive pages? It's CSS, which is pretty cool. As long as the line height is set and not changed, it works pretty good! (Thanks for checking out my site)
#
[morgan]
Yeah it really focused my attention. Like just a consistent nicely styled timeline like that really grabbed my eyes
#
burgeonlab
Haha, it's an easy first title. What's your site? I can't seem to click on your username
#
burgeonlab
You're very kind! Thanks for appreciating it. I meant to share a post on how to do it, but haven't. Maybe I should!
#
[morgan]
It's a Hugo site too
#
burgeonlab
Cool! Just reading it now. Congrats on your first contribution/PR! I contributed for the first time too this year and it was cool to actually see your work being merged and accepted. Good work.
#
[morgan]
To WCAG or another repository ?
#
[morgan]
Nice work either way !
#
[Jo]
Welcome burgeonlab! What's your site, i dont think i saw it in chat :^°
#
burgeonlab
Nah not as meaningful as WCAG. It was a Markdown editor FOSS app called Retext and also contributed to the Hugo theme I'm using
#
burgeonlab
Hi there Jo. If you click on my username, it should bring you to my blog
#
[Jo]
Ah yes in the web client!
#
burgeonlab
I like your photos and IG sections.
#
burgeonlab
Oh sorry, if you can't see it, it's just burgeonlab.com
#
[Jo]
Your colophon is very detailed! I should make a colophon 🤔
#
[Jo]
thanks burgeonlab++

I like colophons a lot! Yeah I recommend making one (it's great for future reference too) bcause they're just full of interesting technical details about how blogs are made. When I first started, that's kinda how I learnt how people made interesting personal sites.

I'll just say again the timeline is a nice feature, I feel like I could really make a few that show good qualities
#
[morgan]
The theme of my website is somewhere between a personal website and resume/CV like info. I'm also pretty interested in some particular topics I've been on years or months long journeys about, and a succinct timeline kinda would show some of the progression
#
burgeonlab
Sounds like a good plan using it as a "diagrammatic" way of showing your skills/progress.

I'm just setting up to join my first webring! Deploying it in a few minutes. Just got a cute little dice svg for the "random site" link.

Anyone showing up with a website in the website club and being humble ... It's pretty much like "one of us, one of us, one of us". The mods and founders are like yussss this is what we built to see
#
[morgan]
I imagine at any rate
#
burgeonlab
Is this you, Trevor? https://www.trovster.com/ (I don't use IRC... I don't know how to mention someone. `username:` or `@` doesn't seem to do anything...

Thanks Capjamesg! I love the resources you have on technical writing. It's something I'm interested in
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Yeah, that is my website.
#
burgeonlab
The auto changing color theme is very cool, and love the stats page—it's on my todo list once I have a bit more content!
#
[Trevor_Morris]
Thanks. You can select a specific colour if you wish. I wanted to do more with a "theme" but I'm not a designer. And I would need/want to refactor the CSS with tokens to support that.
#

Thank you!

Sorry about the commands, how do I leave the channel on the web client? I want to use my nickname on the weechat IRC client I downloaded just now instead. Thanks in advance.
#
capjamesg
I think you can just close the tab? I'm not 100% sure though.
#
burgeonlab
Yeah I tried closing the tab, my whole browser, but it doesn't seem to work. The nickname still is "taken" by the web client... I'm a complete IRC noob, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask about this.

there's weirdly a lot of similarities between the amateur radio community and the activitypub/mastodon community in that they both consider a lot of the level of security to be "because we trust each other". the radio world is way worse, but this stats thing is a good example.
#
to2ds
Indeed. Although I don't know much about amateur radio community.
#
[Al_Abut]
I mean I can post them now but they usually come out as narrative photoessays because I can only do it from the computer. Posting from the phone on the go will be a fun change.
