perryflynn good morning, after a few months with other priorities I created yesterday a new page for non-IT stuff (the IT stuff is on https://svr.ls): https://pery.li/blog/2025/11/20/personal-website.html

#
perryflynn Thanks. I used the "posterize" filter in gimp.
#
perryflynn To simulate low-color images from the old days. ๐

paperbritt Does anyone have experience of running something like: https://github.com/ckolderup/postmarks (single user fedi thing) on shared hosting? I've been having a hunt for a bookmarks sharing thing I might actually use and this feels the closest.
#
paperbritt Perhaps involving installing on a subdomain via cpanel? I'm very unfamiliar with using cpanel terminal but I understand that it does have one. I'm so used to the straight forward couple of clicks wordpress style instal these days that I forget the before times.

Zegnat Very distantly related, but if you want to simulate low-color images, try dithering in colour mode here: https://www.tooooools.app/ I have been having some fun with that one!

Ana2 Happy timezones, everyone! My name is Ana and I am looking forward to blogging again. I have no knowledge with coding or anything like that. Writing and photography is what I do for a living.
#
Ana2 I was curious to check out if I need to make a IndieWeb site in order to participate in the blogging challenges/prompts. I would like to start there before fully committing to a personal site
#
[jeremycherfas] Welcome Ana2. You say blogging again; do you still have a website?
#
Ana2 Thank you Jeremy. And no. I dismantled my LLC during the pandemic.
#
Ana2 I currently work for a company, so my income is from that. I have weekends off and would love to start blogging like I did back in high school and college. I recently began looking at microblog, mastodon, and now here.
#
[jeremycherfas] Well, you need somewhere to put your responses to the challenges. http://Micro.blog is a very good starting point, especially if you have ( or can buy) a personal domain.
#
Ana2 My ex-fiance was controlling with what I wrote online, and it prompted me to stay away from blogging for years.
#
[jeremycherfas] It allows you to interact with Mastodon while still โowningโ what you produce.
#
Ana2 Thank you for your input, Jeremy
#
[jeremycherfas] We call that POSSE.
#
[jeremycherfas] What is POSSE
#
Loqi POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content https://indieweb.org/posse
#
Ana2 Oh! I like that idea
#
[jeremycherfas] ^^^
#
Ana2 Thank you Loqi!
#
[jeremycherfas] There are of course other options that donโt require you to do any coding, but I am not familiar with them.
#
Ana2 And that is what I am researching. If I create a site here on IndieWeb, how would that look like since I have no knowledge with that? Once upon a time on Myspace, yes, but not today. haha

[jeremycherfas] Here on Indieweb is not actually possible. The site at http://indieweb.org is a huge wiki. Individual users may have their own pages but those arenโt really equivalent to a blog or other kind of website.
#
[jeremycherfas] If I get this right, Loqi may offer a link so you can see mine. Whois jeremycherfas?
#
[jeremycherfas] Phew.
#
[jeremycherfas] You automatically belong to the Indieweb if you have a website of your own. With a bit of fiddling you can use that to sign in here to be part of IndieWeb.
#
capjamesg There are plenty of tools out there to help get started. https://micro.blog is a good one. https://omg.lol is good too. WordPress is a popular option although a bit more time consuming to set up.

#
Ana2 Thank you all for the warm welcome and links!
#
Ana2 My goal is to make the least work for something I love.
#
[jeremycherfas] An admirable goal. @Ana2++
#
Ana2 1 Karma? What is that? hehe
#
Loqi Karma is a community recognition tool used in the IndieWeb community and powered by the friendly bot Loqi https://indieweb.org/Karma
#
Ana2 Oh! Thank you. I will be waiting for my gift card in the nail :P
#
Ana2 *mail, even
#
Ana2 Me just realizing Loqi is a friendly bot.
#
Ana2 Additionally, once I create the microblog account, I can participate in the FRESH and Homebrew meetings?
#
Ana2 I've been avoiding the sessions since I havent created my site
#
Ana2 Thank you Artlung! It is just so intimidating since I am not "techy" in that fashion
#
Ana2 I am making it a new personal goal to invest in classes to learn
#
[morgan] Welcome welcome. A lot of effort has been put into making it as easy as possible to get involved and remain less techy. The sort of community expectations and rules are pretty well documented - basically things like trying to recruit people to join a business venture, sharing websites that are commercial in nature without having any personal website to go with it, these are the kinds of things that might get some questions or criticism ๐.
#
[morgan] Some of us _are_ quite techy sometimes, but we keep that sort of split into various channels of discussion. Friendly folks
#
Ana2 Thank you Morgan for your input as well. You have all been very helpful and welcoming.
#
Ana2 I am excited for this new venture.
