people do the SSG thing, get the fastest builder, and then wrap it all in a github action for some reason

yeah, hugo is pretty awesome

Another Hugo user here. I like it a lot too!

Tbh I've got into just doing things from scratch with VS Code and a live server. I developed some tools to manage SEO and carbon data disclosure (sounds bigger than it is: I mean just showing it on the page), and also blog updates. All CLI.
#
rosesaysthis
I liked the look of Hugo. I just prefer to control my own systems and know exactly what each line is doing. There were components I didn't want, and other components I did that didn't exist.
#
[morgan]
Making tools and doing things the learning way is always good. My personal site is helpful to me but is not actually a huge focus of effort but at the same time I feel like I understand every line of what my site is doing basically after having to upgrade a Hugo version and trying to get in there and make it a more accessible design. It's kind of a Frankenstein of a blog template now but I like it enough.
#
[morgan]
Everyone around here basically will encourage you to blog and refine your learning experiences - would be great to read about your approach to carbon reporting

Hello all! I've been looking for a small web/indie web community. Have been learning how to code on and off (so, pretty terrible) but I'm committed to making my own custom website because trying other ways never works. It's just not me and I hate the limitations most plug & play website builders have.
#
snowlesstaco
I absolutely love the indieweb movement and love the life that it brings back to the internet. And I love seeing the sheer creativity of it all! 😌

Hi Acerbic_Inq[d]! Is your site online yet or still in progress? Let us know if you have any questions.
#

My site is in progress, and I do have some questions. Haha. I'll ask them in the dev chat later. Thank you for asking! 🙏

I gel with your general motivations here! I feel like anything human-done is always nicer than generic builder stuff, so don't be down on your coding skills. I'm not the best, either!

I have no idea why those ancient Publ release posts just got relisted on indieweb news. The pings went out ages ago.

Welcome snowlesstaco or Acerbic_Inq or whoever; just cannot get my head around addressing from one bridge to another.

I enjoyed that piece GWG++

I would greatly appreciate it if you would also talk about self-hosting itself, in addition to the various gadgets that you use to do it.
#
GWG
[jeremycherfas]: I talk about some of the software, but I do need to dig in a bit more
#
GWG
Even if only so I can remember
#
[jeremycherfas]
The best reason. In a way, it is all software, because it doesn’t matter that much whether you are running it on a Pi, a hosted server, or a server on a device in your home.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Setting up my server on Hetzner was part cargo cult, part actual exploration and understanding.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Did you ever write up your self-hosted Compass?
#
GWG
I think I did write parts of it.
#
GWG
But, I have the same problems you have
#
GWG
Compass doesn't support PKCE yet, and PHP support is older

#
GWG
I should see if I can do something about that.
#
GWG
I also never got the job queue to work
#
Loqi
I agree
#
GWG
I could also migrate over to something like Dawarich

#
[jeremycherfas]
The lack of PKCE doesn’t worry me. Should it? Likewise, if I host it myself, either on my Pi or on Hetzner, I can specify PHP 7.4 and stop paying $5 a month to Dreamhost.
#
GWG
No, more not having to have duplicate infrastructure
#
GWG
I don't think I need something as complicated as Dawarich, but I would like to see if I could do similar things on top of Compass
#
[jeremycherfas]
Darwarich looks to be very attractive, and there are instructions for modifying it to run on a Hetzner tiny server. Removes a single-point-of-aaron for me too. Might be doable on my Pi too, through Tailscale.
#
GWG
The search features are definitely nice looking

Ah, I didn't see that. Seems the writer is equating the “indie web” to 90s era STYLE and two central hubs, so kind of misses the entire point…

I have some loosely held opinions about this verge article that might sound serious over a text medium but mainly just making chatter. I feel like these articles are often quite cheap. Hey what if we had mouse cursors that followed you around, clip art and stuff again isnt that whacky. Hey look these people have strong opinions about things. Something that you would probably find cartoonish. I think the idea of a community of people with blogs
#
[morgan]
and websites in a sort of modern way and the philosophy of owning your own stuff is actually too on the nose for the corporate web status quo that many dont event quite discuss it
#
[morgan]
again just making chatter but Its almost as if the article is written specifically with the idea that the thing discussed is able to be ignored as a curiosity , so it doesnt go into any of the modern owning your own stuff more aspirational goals kinda thing. This is common of many news media which reproduces the status quo somehow

[snarfed]

always surprises me when journalists who write on a "thing" don't bother to look up said thing in web search or at least Wikipedia to get existing context for it
#
[tantek]
like hello journalism 101?

To be fair, maybe they did find https://indieweb.org/indieweb-style-guide and decided the article actually was about the lowercase "indie web"
#
aaronpk
They didn't mention "IndieWeb" in the article at all
troojg joined the channel
#
[tantek]
unlikely because if they had found that they would have mentioned a much broader meaning than two websites lol
#
aaronpk
Heh fair
#
[tantek]
I have never before seen anyone claim or imply neocities is "the indie web"
#
[tantek]
I'm not sure even the founders/creators of neocities would claim that
#
[morgan]
*dons critical theorist hat, smokes a pipe while wearing a tweed jacket* I honestly think the dynamic here is about power. The purpose of the news system is what it does and is to reproduce power. Talking about owning a domain, posting on your own site and stuff challenges hegemony is simply too radical for our readers
#
[tantek]
the counterexample to that would be the much more well-informed Verge article on POSSE
#
[tantek]
wow that was 2y ago!
#
[morgan]
Oh nice good to say. Definitely loosely held chatter from my end today

agreed re media coverage. journalism is a very big spectrum, there's obviously plenty of crap, with bad incentives, but there's also lots of good, well-researched stuff, and outlets that carefully control their incentives to good ends. and of course even the good stuff isn't perfectly consistent, as witnessed by those two contrasting Verge articles
