Caw is an unlisted website in which the author can implement what "Caw" means for them.

So is https://indieweb.org/events/2026-02-04-hwc-pacific#/caw_slash_page_from_Fractalkitty the first mention of caw? Looks like it is also added as a See Also on https://indieweb.org/chicken :D

meet my new /blogroll page, its powered by my indiekit microsub implementation, so whenever I add a new sub to my microsub collection it shows up in the /blogroll page as individual item but also as a blog source linking directly to the original blog https://rmendes.net/blogroll

mahboubine
I'd love to setup a website with full indieweb functionality
#
mahboubine
sadly can't afford a VPS at the moment
#
mahboubine
so I am sticking with a ssg + webmentions setup
#
Loqi
friendly reminder mahboubine, that's a lot of dev jargon! VPS, SSG... can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
NegateThis
mahboubine: I used to host my site on a public Unix server that was kind enough to add my site to their web server config. It was free, but I donated every now and then. You could try a similar setup if you can't afford a VPS
#
mahboubine
NegateThis: where can i find this?
#
mahboubine
or a similar service if that one no longer exists
#
NegateThis
There's also envs.net
#
NegateThis
Just keep in mind that adding my domain to their web server config was an act of kindness and not an expected service
#
mahboubine
yeah I'll go in with no expectations
#
mahboubine
I just want to leave the shithole that is vercel
#
NegateThis
No idea what vercel is 😔
#
mahboubine
You should keep it that way

Sometimes I think about running a cloudron just to facilitate hosting for this kind of cases, it would be so simple to handle domains, users, apps for each users, in exchange for a small contribution, it would be kind of a shared vps with cloudron on top to faciliate handling of domain management, dns (they provide DNZ zone management via the API of many hosting providers), yes of course this could be done without cloudron, but its just so much simpler and easy
#
rMdes
to share a vps this way.
#
Loqi
rMdes: we try to keep dev talk (API, VPS) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
rMdes
but its also a responsibility I'm not willing to take as of now; but concretely I already do this for my friends and have been doing it since a decade. after a while some moved to their own vps and their own setup but it allowed them to taste the feeling of their own presence on the web without having to think at all about technical implementation

nowadays letterboxd is the only non-federated social "place" I enjoy using
#
[tantek]
That's a good testimonial. I've heard similar good things from others about Letterboxd. What kinds of things do you post there?
#
mahboubine
[tantek]: just my movie reviews, I like to think I write them for my future self
#
mahboubine
but in reality I still care about what others think about them.

btw why do our names have + in front of them?
#
[KevinMarks]
It's tough now with all the AI crawlers chewing up bandwidth
#
[tantek]
sounds like you may be on IRC and I think the "+" means you have voice
#
[tantek]
mahboubine, posting for your future self makes sense! have you considered or tried posting your movie reviews then manually cross-posting them to Letterboxd?
#
[artlung]
In recent interview of Charli XCX by Conan O'Brien he complimented and asked her about her Letterboxd reviews.
#
mahboubine
Oh right, forgot there is cross-chat here
#
mahboubine
Yep posting reviews on my own site would be good
#
[tantek]
I don't have an account but I was considering setting one up to POSSE because friends have positive things to say about it.
#
mahboubine
Looks like some folks set it up the other way
#
mahboubine
posting on LB and showing them on the site with a script
#
NegateThis
[tantek]: I've started doing the opposite, posting my Letterboxd reviews to my site: negatethis.com/movies/. Super easy bc Letterboxd provides an RSS feed for your profile.
#
NegateThis
Posting on my site then posting to Letterboxd is possible, but I genuinely enjoy using LB
#
mahboubine
NegateThis: nice site
#

What do you guys think about private identities on the web?
#
mahboubine
everytime I create a new username and decide to only use it on a particular platform to keep my identity hidden
#
mahboubine
I end up using it/mentioning it elsewhere
#
[snarfed]
what's a private identity?
#
[snarfed]
do you mean, a pseudonym that you don't connect to your "real" or "main" identity?

Letterboxd is ace. I use it to find new movies to watch. I copy'n'paste my reviews on there, from my website. They have an API, but it's not public and they don't seem to give out keys.
#
[tantek]
NegateThis++ worth adding yourself to to /Letterboxd as an IndieWeb Example of PESOSing from it! Also works as an approach to keep a copy of your posts for yourself!

#

[tantek]: You're talking here, correct?
#
[tantek]
yes! in the IndieWeb Examples, e.g. see how [me1850] documented his use of posting on Letterboxd then having those posts automatically show up on his website
#
mahboubine
[snarfed]: yes
#
NegateThis
Gotcha. I'll add to it some time today when I've got the time (:
