Osteophage that link for Defining ... Enemies doesn't work. It just goes to your LLM post
madude joined the channel
#
ulhar4409
for me it sort of does that, but adds a # fragment to point to an added portion
#
osteophage
Yes, the idea was to submit a link to the addition. Any suggestions for how to go about that?
#
[tantek]
IndieNews doesn't support submitting fragments. I'd suggest writing that addition as a separate post.
#
[tantek]
We can follow up in #indieweb-dev if you want to know why fragments don't work for server to server protocols

It looks like it is an extension for adding POSSE support to Ghost.

interesting, I was at the W3C instance of that session mentioned in the post and that summary neglects a few things IMO. might have to blog my version of what I saw/said and what happened

will likely be a delta from the last time I blogged about this: https://tantek.com/2010/281/b1/what-is-the-open-web

Oooh I don't think I have seen that either!

solid post. I regret I fell away from following writing about what the web _means_ for so many years. I kidded myself that it had all already been written. and of course, life happened to me. the garden of the web requires tending and introspection and I'm glad to be keeping up with argument and counterargument, explanations and refinements, again.
#
[morgan]
Its a strong sign of life but also can get a bit rehashed. Ive been thinking myself about how things that people actually use attract some detractions and argument. Its not like "a sure sign" of something being useful but they almost always go hand in hand.

btw here are the raw minutes in IRC of that W3C instance of the session that mnot's blog post is about. the minutes are MUCH spicier / more detailed that that post (or the gdoc it links to)

[tantek]++ for sharing that link.

I haven't really thought much about what the web being "open" actually _means_ tbh. I'll have to do some reading and pondering this week!

I wanted to mention what Forgiving February as proposed by Mandaris has looked like for me. I wrote a 400 word post about remote work and my life on Linkedin, a den of horror, but got some good reactions and input from it. My forgiving part of this is just to accept I did it, and to make a copy of the words into my obsidian and try and not post more.
#
[morgan]
Some habits die really hard, and just gotta be nice to yourself 🙂
#
xangelo
I keep writing and deleting posts about this :/ in my head this is the logical conclusion of openweb meeting capitalism isn't it? (i'm speaking specifically about openness in regards to content)
#
[tantek]
nothing is ever "done". there is no "conclusion". reality isn't a novel or Hollywood novel
#
[tantek]
Hollywood movie*
#
[morgan]
I feel like the topic has got harder for me write about as Ive become more aware of just how vast and big the impact of the web is. Its a good feeling to feel small sometimes

but harder to write sometimes 🙂
#

i don't mean conclusion in terms of finality, but I think "inevitability" is a better word? It doesn't describe an end, but a focal point
#
[morgan]
"inevitability" is one very hot point / often abused
#
[morgan]
a lot of people promoting crypto/web3/llms really rely on trying to make people think that they have to accept it, and these things end up being a flash in the pan compared to the web even as big and difficulty they may seem
#
[morgan]
its a hard one to shake for people
#
ulhar4409
the only cryptos i care about are cryptography and cryptozoology
#
[tantek]
yeah I tend to dismiss such claims of inevitability, it's almost always a sales/marketing technique of someone pushing something
#
[morgan]
I myself went down a little rabbit hole where I thought about trying to propose "guard rails" for AI usage in one environment,- specifically the Authoring Tools Accessibility Guidelines that Im helping out with, and then I kind of went on a return journey and decided to just oppose llm usage or be indifferent to it as a guideline document thats meant to be evergreen
#
Loqi
friendly reminder [morgan], it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical (web3, LLM), can you take it to #indieweb-dev?
#
[morgan]
oh yeah for sure can do 🙂
#
[morgan]
sharp bot, very predictable keywords hah
#
ulhar4409
i do wonder if moving to dev is overkill for a tangential mention of tech :P
#
ulhar4409
maybe it would be warranted for going into detail on topics like that but i don't think a bot can necessarily judge if that's what's happening
#
[morgan]
Yeah we are fine to keep chatting here, but if it got chunky and kept using those topics maybe it would move
#
[morgan]
Anyways, basically I sort of fell into the inevitability trap before, its very hard when everything is seeming to say that message
#
[morgan]
all these private venture things pale in comparison to the impact the web has made upon the world and will continue to be minuscule experiments. They are all trying to frame themselves as disruptive, engaging things... but the web itself was released for free after being worked on from CERN, built upon public infrastructure and funds has done so much more.

do you guys like the read time count on blogs
#
aspizu
the usual formula is word count / 200
#
gRegor
It's not perfect, but enough mentions of the list of /jargon words usually works well as a prompt for the bot to nudge. It's important to help keep the main chat /welcoming
#
gRegor
aspizu, it's a neat feature though I don't usually give it much consideration
#
gRegor
what is read time?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "read time" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "read time is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
gRegor
Hm, I thought we had a page
#
gRegor
what is read time?
#
Loqi
reading time is a feature of posts (usually articles) that indicates the expected amount of time (typically in minutes) that it would take to read the post https://indieweb.org/read_time

gRegor
