status_boltJust watched a video about the indie web and came to this site. I am not sure how to get started. I would like to browse all of the different sites. Is there a master list or something? It is not very clear how to start finding all of these wonderful looking sites reminding me of better times, could somebody help guide me? Thank you.
LoqiA webring is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure; check out the indiewebring, a webring across IndieWeb sites and blogs https://indieweb.org/webring
capjamesg"is the indieweb a way of bringing back the internet we all knew and loved in its hayday?" - not exactly. The indie web is about empowering people to make their own personal websites.
capjamesgPart of the indie web is appreciating aspects of the web from the past but we also look ahead to the many things that are possible with websites now.
neatnik[jeremycherfas]: thanks! I tried to make the kind of guide that I would want if I wanted to run a legit IRC server starting from nowhere and without too much server admin knowledge
[jeremycherfas]I'm never going to run my own irc server, but I went into Hetzner in a fit of enthusiasm after IWC Berlin and got myself in a right old muddle. I may well cancel my existing server and start again guided by your post.
[jeremycherfas]There is a huge unmet need, IMHO, for guides at exactly that level. Not assuming much and explaining what you are doing and why you are doing it.
[jeremycherfas]I just have the one, which was hosting a Hugo photo gallery, but I have now moved that to a subdomain on Hetzner webhosting. There are definite pros (security) and cons (no SSH, only SFTP) but I'm not confident enough to set most things up on a server.
Guest7539I found this place yesterday from a youtube video. Im just trying to figure out what indie web is and if it actuality could be used in replacement of corporate web
status_boltGuest7539 I'm new too, came in here thinking the indieweb was a collection of old school design personal websites. But from what I gather it is about people taking back control of their content. Moving it away from big tech and towards independent, personal owned websites. I think that is the general idea.
umpcHello. Just wanted to say hi. I’m here for the same reason. I have been interested in checking out IRC again in light of recent events and someone shared a video about the indie web with me. I have my vps ready to check out cool open source server software that’s out there and maybe make a website
Loqi🌱 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/Getting_started
[jeremycherfas]The Indieweb wiki has a lot of information. If anything is unclear, feel free to ask here and someone will turn up with an answer before too long.
[jeremycherfas]That's hard to say. Most people are on time zones in the US with quite a few in Europe and lots elsewhere too. Hard to say when it is busier, but later in the day usually. Which time zone are you in?
[jeremycherfas]You just triggered our friendly bot loqi. You can ask when is to get information about events, or what is for topics that may be in the wiki, like I did earlier.
