#
[Sophia_wood] I'm avoiding youtube at the moment. I wish a majority of the talks I like were posted elsewhere.
#
[capjamesg] Yeah. Most I have seen are on YouTube except for a few on Vimeo.
#
[artlung] FreeTube interests me. https://freetubeapp.io

#
[Kupietz] Curious, why are you avoiding YouTube?
#
[Kupietz] Ah, I never see any algo. I have a ublock origin rule that blocks suggested videos and all ads.
#
[Kupietz] YouTube is one of the many sites I could never use without ublock origin.
#
[Sophia_wood] I don't opt into the algorithm and so it suggests rather disturbing content - also - not happy with google as a whole.

[Sophia_wood] Not happy with a platform that if you don't block the crap out of it you could be exposed to a lot of stuff - which means I don't like sharing it.

[tantek] ^ these are good reasons to add to /YouTube#Why_not (create that section at top if it's not already there)
#
[Kupietz] Totally get you on wanting to avoid Google, I do myself. I’m pretty much dependent on Gmail at this point, unfortunately, but avoid them as much as I can. I totally feel you on the YT suggested content, they show a ton of stuff that I just plain don’t even want in my head, and don’t provide any way to block channels… that actually bothered me a whole lot for a long time. But fortunately ublock’s custom rules can take care of
#
[Kupietz] that stuff. I still get suggested video thumbnails at the end of watching something, but usually they’re nowhere near as bad as the stuff that used to come up on the side bar that I never see anymore. Plus for really egregious stuff I wrote a generalized web content filter with a long list of keywords I don’t ever want to see content about, it neatly excises certain people and things from my entire world. I know they’re still ou
#
[Kupietz] there… But I’m content for them to stay out there and never have to think about them.
#
[Kupietz] I haven’t updated this in a really long time at this point, but this gives you an idea of the lengths I go to to sanitize my online experience. https://github.com/kupietools/webcooler-userscript
#
[Sophia_wood] I think there is a short story by Ken Liu on content blocking.
#
[capjamesg] > Not happy with a platform that if you don’t block the crap out of it you could be exposed to a lot of stuff - which means I don’t like sharing it.
#
[capjamesg] This is a really good point ^^
#
[artlung] I updated my `/feeds` page and was prompted to look at old posts of mine mentioning feed readers and Google Readers and was delighted to see that in 2013 I linked to Jeremy Keith. https://adactio.com/journal/6291/ -- _"Once Facebook had proven that it was possible to be the one-stop-shop for your user’s every need, that became the model to emulate. Startups stopped seeing themselves as just one part of a bigger web. Now they wanted

[Kupietz] > not happy with a platform that if you don’t block the crap put of it [etc]
#
[Kupietz] Somehow missed this part of the comment before… That’s an excellent point.
#
[Kupietz] We could use something like Xcancel but for youtube. Share a link that proxies the video, nothing else.
#
gRegor YouTube does have a "do not recommend this channel" option. Works well in my experience, though have only had to block a couple. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6342839
#
Loqi YouTube is a video hosting silo that has known issues https://indieweb.org/youtube
#
[capjamesg] I really don’t like how they make recommendations in `iframe` embeds.
#
[capjamesg] Because I have personalisation off I fall back to whatever.
#
[capjamesg] And almost every time there is a recommendation I don’t want to see.
#
[Kupietz] BTW You won’t find anyone less happy with what YouTube has become than me… I was very involved with it early on, when it was a real community. I was disgusted with it by about 2012, they killed everything that was great about it. I could rant at length about my complaints with it. But, it’s still where a lot of content that has value to me gets posted (among the gargantuan amount of valueless content.)
#
[Kupietz] I still have friends today that I made on YouTube in 2008. Can you imagine making friends on YouTube? It actually used to happen.
#
[Kupietz] James, I’m telling you, ublock can take care of all that easily. When I get to my computer in a little while I’ll post the rule. I think I may already have a post about it somewhere.
#
[Kupietz] Will do.
