On the topic of category pages that has come up in a few recent HWC Europe meetups, does anyone have custom descriptions at the top of category pages?
#
[capjamesg]
I have one on https://jamesg.blog/steampunk-post to explain the context of the category, and a few other categories have these too.

aaronpk
I did that as a "pinned post" at the top of my tag pages

capjamesg I had considered this in the past, decided not to do it because I only have 4 categories which are pretty self explanatory. Same with tags. But I think for your`/steampunk-post` cat it makes sense, because it gives added context to the reader which would not have been apparent without it

[capjamesg]
Oooh I like that idea of a custom description being useful mainly if additional context is needed.

[capjamesg]
Does anyone have a /verify page like https://www.mollywhite.net/verify/ ? I wonder if it’s worth documenting.
#
[capjamesg]
I feel like I have seen a few of these in the wild.
#
[capjamesg]
My ideal implementation would be a text entry field that let you type in a username and choose a platform so I don’t have to enumerate every account I have though.
#
[capjamesg]
And it would be cool if a /verify page could say when you last used an account / domain so someone would know if your account has been repurposed.

[artlung]
My https://artlung.com/elsewhere/ de facto does that, including defunct links. But other folks use “elsewhere” I believe as “published elsewhere”
#
thamara_k
used to have all links listed on my contact page, which I removed because I wanted to make a separate verify page like Molly's. Still sitting in my (never-ending) to-do list
#
thamara_k
visiting https://slashpages.net/ was a mistake, lol
#
brennan
I do! brennan.day/accounts
#
[tantek]
What is elsewhere?
#
Loqi
elsewhere is a common IndieWeb building block, both on homepages for linking to other aspects of your identity elsewhere, and on posts for linking to copies of your posts elsewhere https://indieweb.org/elsewhere
#
[tantek]
More examples there ^
#
brennan
and then brennan.day/pages is my slash pages
#
thamara_k
brennan++ for the weeks code, didn't realise you were here in chat
#
Loqi
brennan has 2 karma in this channel over the last year (4 in all channels)
#
brennan
wait, i mean brennan.day/slash-pages
#
brennan
oh you're using the code from /weeks? I'd love to see it, I stole it off Buster Benson myself haha
#
thamara_k
I'll reach out when I'm done, gonna take a while lol
#
brennan
making that project for myself, the most crazy thing was finding out a massive asteroid could possibly hit earth on my 33rd birthday (99942 Apophis)
#
thamara_k
good way to go, if you ask me
#
thamara_k
On a serious note, seeing the celestial and world events on your page has inspired me to look out for similarish things when I make mine
#
brennan
awesome! :D it is very fun to try to see what can be known so far in advance

had an interesting chat with [capjamesg] about indicating some degree of "presence" or "having visited recently" on a personal website, perhaps only of a small subset of people (like your friends), so at least you the owner of the site can see "who of my friends/colleagues" has visited what on my site recently or is currently "visiting"
#
[tantek]
sort of like Swarm checkins, but for your personal website, and implicit rather than explicit
#
[snarfed]
fascinating
#
[tantek]
imagine that you as the site owner could see a set of icons of your friends who are currently viewing your home page, similar to how Google Docs shows who currently has a document open

has anyone built anything like this? feels like it could make personal site more implicitly "social" without all the dopamine-addictive like/repost etc. reactions

Sounds like a neat feature to have (for those that can have them)
#
[tantek]
also wondering what this "feature" is called (e.g. in existing implementations like Google Docs, or Discord channels, or Discourse forum active person indicators)

"presence indicator" comes to mind.

what is presence
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "presence" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "presence is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
I thought we had a page for this specifically on how people indicated their own level of "presence" on their websites, e.g. a little green dot next to the chat systems that they happened to be "on" currently
#
[tantek]
yes [schmarty] it is a form of presence indicator, it's also similar to an implied "guests" lists, like a guestbook but realtime and without needing to "sign it"

jak2k
When I hear "presence", I think of Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) and online/busy/… in chat apps in general. I also think of that Discord feature what friends are playing.
#
jak2k
I'd maybe call the feature of collaborative editors "Who's here" or collaborator indicator, but that's not fitting for viewing a website.
#
jak2k
What about "reading indicator"?
cotsuka joined the channel
#
[tantek]
"reading" assumes an intent / activity, I'm not sure anything more can be implied than "visitor" which is already an established term in /analytics
#
gRegor
phpbb calls it "who is online"
#
[tantek]
yes that's a more accurate summary/description. I do like the simpler virtual metaphor of "who is here?"
#
[tantek]
it's also something that could reflect *which* page on your site someone is on (current tab being viewed) if they have multiple tabs open
#
[tantek]
sort of akin to "which room are they in"
#
[tantek]
I feel the VR folks should already have terms for this sort of thing

This is a good user-centric "ideal 'CMS'" post that still does touch on some protocol stuff. Very personal perspective yet I find myself agreeing with a lot of it: https://lordmatt.co.uk/technology/the-email-social-media-and-indieweb-node-i-need-that-will-probably-never-exist-that-i-think-authors-would-love/ — very indieweb IMO

anecdotal, but looks like Medium is blocking Internet Archive. I keep getting "Job failed" when I attempt to manually archive a single Medium article. Anyone else have trouble doing so?
