[artlung]I like to think we are forward looking. And that this work is a continuation of existing work to make and maintain the personal web. But the fact people can say "retroweb" in earnest and view "indie" webs with nostalgia does imply the retro part.
[artlung]but a truly retro movement would reject much of modernity. And we do NOT do that. "We" want new cool stuff along with 88x31 gifs and web rings. "We" also want bridging and web components and modern tooling. A person who wants to create the cutting-edgest tech and aesthetics fits in here just as much as someone who wants to stand up telnet servers that ascii-ize a movie.
[capjamesg]I agree with [artlung] re: forward looking. I think we should look to the past to see what we can learn but we should instead be focusing on building a better future.

[Al_Abut]There's a whole movement in car culture called “restomods” that it reminds me of. Taking old cars and giving them modern components, or making modern new cars with older principles, tech or styles.
[Al_Abut]I guess the retro part for me as an 80’s and 90’s kid is the idea that “computer literacy” and basic programming was a fundamental skill that anyone could and should learn in order to participate in our fancy information superhighways
[Al_Abut]Instead it looks like we’re going into the Star Trek future of invisible natural language computers and soon the Star Wars future of everyday robotics
[Al_Abut]I do love pure retro too. That's basically what I do when I unplug and go into pure analog mode. Old school dslr camera, mechanical watch, pen and paper, print magazine or newspaper, etc.
