We're finally coming down the stretch on recovery from the Eaton Fire. Beyond the whole lawsuit thing, which will take many years, we're finally about to have our roof replaced and things will be at least somewhat back to order.

Looks like I missed some fun stuff on /zines in the past few months? I know what I'll be tinkering on this weekend now...

In the meanwhile, it's late and time for some shut eye... g'night all.

Hey, all. Got to indieweb.org from a YouTube video about getting out of the attention economy corporate web (i.e., AWS, Google Cloud, etc.). I like the ideals, but it all feels a little philosophical and abstract -- even after reading quite a bit of the website. I'm also not a developer so it feels like a lot doesn't apply to me? But I'm curious if there are quick primers you'd recommend?

what is getting started?
#
Loqi
🌱 Get started on the indieweb by connecting with the IndieWeb community, getting a personal domain, a place for your content, and setting up your home page and other IndieWeb essentials https://indieweb.org/getting_started

Thanks, I'll take a look. Are there working professionals who are doing this, not necessarily just creatives/programmers?
#
[artlung]
In short, yes. But if you're excluding “creatives” and “programmers” as not counting for your definition it’s probably interesting how you'd define how much creativity and programming is allowed before that person IS “a creative” or “a programmer.”
#
cwkildegaard
I guess what I should say is...if your main web identity is not necessarily artistic or programming-related?
#
gRegor
Welcome, cwkildegaard! There's a variety of people here from around the world. It does lean a bit more towards developers, for which we have the indieweb-dev channel, but we try to keep this main channel user-focused, talking about things people are doing on their sites or want to do. Quickest way to get started is to stake out a corner of the web for a personal site, whether it's a micro.blog site, neocities, or something else

like a CMS
#
gRegor
Absolutely, there's all sorts of sites in the indieweb. A lot are blog style sites, photos, short notes, etc.
#
gRegor
what is indieweb webring?
#
Loqi
🕸💍 Indiewebring is a webring across IndieWeb sites and blogs, part of the great rebirth of of webrings powered by #IndieWeb technology that made 2018 the year of the webring https://indieweb.org/indieweb_webring
#
gRegor
You could browse through some sites that have opted into that ^
#
gRegor
Also a lot more options for discovering sites documented on https://indieweb.org/directory
#
gRegor
Do you have a personal site currently?
#
cwkildegaard
I used to, but not really right now
#
[artlung]
Yeah, and https://indieweb.org/discovery as well. Explore more, find more folks. In terms of “people on the wiki” remember that the intent of the wiki is not to include absolutely every human being with a personal website they would call “indie”— it's more illustrative of techniques. You might also find terms like “small web” and “slow web” useful if you're seeking many other kinds of people. Lots of folks have always known th

write and post pics to our own site rather than Friendster or MySpace or Facebook. There's a long history of that.
#
cwkildegaard
I did used to like playing around with hardcoding HTML growing up, but I haven't done much of that in a long time
#
gRegor
A sometimes helpful question we ask is "what's the next thing you'd like to do on your personal site?" or "what's something about [insert service] that you'd like more control of by posting it in your corner of the web"
#
cwkildegaard
I mean, I guess in an ideal world what I'd like to do with a personal site is attract clients. (Though I'd want to check with my employer on that because I'm under supervision in a regulated profession.)
#
gRegor
We do have a handful of examples of that and some documented on https://indieweb.org/IndieWeb_for_business
#

Handwriting a webpage, from my sofa, via a SSH client on the media pc, its a vibe. the only downside is the logitech K400, I hate this thing
#
Loqi
friendly reminder beangal, would you mind moving this more technical conversation (root, SSH) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!
#
gRegor
cwkildegaard, if you don't mind sharing, which YouTube video brought you here?
#
gRegor
C'mon Loqi, not right after they join XD

Hehe
#

the IRC mirror is cool! Never played around with that too much, but I have done a heck of a lot of MUCKing
#
cwkildegaard
Not at all, gRegor. It was a video by Nathan Laundry at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0osJhQ-JCQ
#
gRegor
Nice, I'll check it out
#
cwkildegaard
I'm thinking the best thing might be if I made a personal site that linked to other sites I make. That way I don't have a professional site for attracting clients cluttered by my more creative things. Is that a strategy some people use?
#
[capjamesg]
Welcome to the community!
#
gRegor
Yeah, I think some people have one domain for a professional profile and a separate for more personal stuff. And the personal stuff could be a pseudonym if preferred.

If anyone knows any good resources, always looking for new buttons and blingies! Also potentially joining a webring eventually!
#
[capjamesg]
What is 88x31?
#
Loqi
88x31 pixels was a very popular web badge/button image size in the 1990s, especially among freewheeling and independent sites created on services like GeoCities, and there are IndieWeb 88x31 badges you may use https://indieweb.org/88x31
#
[capjamesg]
You might like that page ^^
#
[capjamesg]
What is a webring?
#
Loqi
A webring is a collection of websites linked together in a circular structure; check out the indiewebring, a webring across IndieWeb sites and blogs https://indieweb.org/webring
#
[capjamesg]
And this one ^^

Thanks for the help everyone. I hope to be back on another day!
#

I appreciate the resources! I'm always just looking for pages that have free buttons en mass, I love collecting the sparklies! And webring wise, I wanna join a few more general ones, but also like... a friend group one yaknow? Make some webrevival friends!
