[Mike][tantek]++ Thanks, I already discovered that post :-) . I actually wound up writing a rather long response here, so I’m gonna move it over to #indieweb-dev.
LoqiThe IndieWeb is a community of independent and personal websites based on the principles of owning your domain and using it as your primary online identity, publishing on your own site first (optionally elsewhere), and owning your content https://indieweb.org/indieweb
keplerthe "issue" with making an indie web search engine is that it'll probably only be accepted if it's human-made, and it's falteringly difficult for a human to find every single possible personal website
[capjamesg]kepler I was indexing 2,000 personal sites at one point. It was a tiny drop in the water, but it was fun to make! Incredibly difficult to maintain though (for me; others could probably do it a lot better!).
kepler[pcarrier], that can be a problem with the politics of the internet now. if hateful websites got indexed, people would raise issues and demand more moderation, and the moderation would become more difficult to maintain as it scales up :/
[capjamesg](Admittedly I didn’t build many moderation tools but my sample size was small and filtered, so the risk was limited. I’d definitely do it differently now.)
[capjamesg]One thing I have liked the idea of is web readers acting as a sort of pseudo-personal search engine, in that it indexes all the sites you like. But it serves more of the purpose of retrieval over time rather than being useful for discovery.
wturrellwe could do with more curated directories by subject area, i think. obviously some sites are hard to categorise. i can’t see as much value in a search engine, because it’s so hard to scale. (remember the days when newspapers and magazines recommended websites?)
[social]The https://ooh.directory a service that already surfaces over 2,400 blogs and when they update. It was the first service doing this. It was created by long term blogger Phil Gyford.
[social]The nice thing about ooh.directory is it also works like RSS. It is categorized, but also has regional filters, posts per month, post recency, and more. There are a lot of stats, like for things linked to.
