thing is clearly unhealthy. But the same time, I have a whole galaxy if friends who refuse to use anything else and it’s my only way of staying in touch with them. I gave it up for a couple of years and totally lost touch with a whole bunch of people, including not finding out that one friend had passed away. I’m kind of mulling over what to do about it.

I'm having a real Issue with Facebook right now. It’s enshittified find beyond belief, Requires heavy duty filtering just to keep my feed from being a morass of posts from people I don’t know or care about, pages I don’t follow, and ads for things I’m not interested in, and most recently — this is one of the many complaints things that was in the rant I decided not to post — last night gave a bigot access to post their hate in my feed.
#
[tantek]
That's rough. Are you able to use a subset like only specific private groups?
#

I think we are all sort of dealing with long-term digital glue from these various platforms. Its always an evolving, changing experience I find. Gentleness with oneself is something Ive tried to apply
#

@tantek - I will check out the argument machine. something about bluesky gives me weird feelings, like its like a hot-boiled concentration of people who still wished there was a main character everyday? I dont know what to say. Obviously lots of great people there too and people cross-posting/having a presence there because of work
#
morganwebdev
I think in my more over-eager sharing days I shared a bunch of stories about how I had trouble giving up some platforms that were turning bad for me. Just because of reasons like FOMO, stuff like Mike what you said about learning about someone having a major life event. TLDR; Resolved that maybe its better if im not inundated with life events + many have quit socials now anyways
#

Re Silo Quit I should edit the wiki with a recanted or returned silo quit. I wanted to quit linkedin so bad and then found that like 4-5 actually good people have ONLY linkedin for work basically or unwieldy foreign SMS and I wanted to send them some messages. I found some semi useful info about work from it. Ive learned to ignore the insane headlines news ticker. TLDR; its bad, and likely not going to get me a job, but im back there I
#
morganwebdev
guess...
#
[tantek]
Yes it's ok to also record your silo-pauses on the silo quit page
#
[tantek]
What is a silo quit
#
Loqi
silo quits are public statements by individuals announcing they have quit posting on or using various silos with no intention to return. Sometimes people take a temporary break or soft quit, AKA a social media break or social media detox https://indieweb.org/silo-quit

[tantek]
Right there in the dfn :)

Nice. Ok I made an update to the wiki. @capjamesg's post outlines some of the core reasons I had when I left it, but Ive returned temporarily at least. Just hope my experience normalizes feeling ok about conflicting thoughts about some of these age old social media platform accounts
#
[tantek]
I have never quit LinkedIn. I have also never posted there. Seems easier that way
#
[tantek]
Also the "feed" there is so laughably bad that it's worse than a late night rando cable tv channel
#
[tantek]
So bad that it's pretty easy to click it off
#
morganwebdev
I mean I feel a similar way, and have a similar stance, I still took psychic damage from the headlines and occasional exposure to the feed.
#
[Mike]
I walked away from LinkedIn a little over a year ago, always with the intention of going back because there are people on there who I like interacting with and it did actually help me make some good connections… Never anything that helped me professionally, but I met some extremely interesting people. But, just the same, for a year now I haven’t been able to bring myself to look at it again.
#
[tw2113]
technically I got my current job through linkedin, but it was more a message to a former coworker who passed along my resume to their HR
#
[tw2113]
so now he's a coworker again

[tantek]
Yeah that's about the only usecase I have for LinkedIn. Helping former co-workers get jobs

Nice. Ive organized someone to stay with when I visit New Zealand again though the platform, as they were one of the people I described who basically did no socials and just had an SMS number otherwise. I gained lodging in this social quest!

Right now Im experimenting with a browser plugin to delete certain things from the experience if I have to return

I'm wondering if it would be helpful to have a "search engine" along with a keyboard shortcut to look something up in the WayBack machine. Ah, looks like the form accepts keywords in addition to URLs

hmm, post only so this is a bit weird

the Closed on Sundays site perhaps ought to return http 503 rather than 200 (depending on how it's made - I can't find out because it's closed)

re: Bluesky - one thing it has going for it is the ability to view posts/timelines without logins - *although* it seems (is this new?) you have to sign in to "join the conversation" (read replies)

so I never created a bluesky login. would quite like to get rid of Twitter, although I'm slightly nervous if someone else re-registers the name and uses it for spam. I did "silo-quits" as a slash page on my own site.

long time all, I am going to spend the weekend trying export my Known database and uploads into my main website, with a heavy dose of vibecoding

all 12,647 posts from Known now archived on my domain...Had to download the database, and the uploads, and rebuilt it...Can't lie Codex did most of the work, but deeply relieved. I thought much of this work was gone forever: https://jgregorymcverry.com/archive/

Were you able to setup redirects form your old Known permalinks to the archive?
#
[jgmac1106]
I haven't got there yet, but it's on the list of things to do before deleting my Known app and sql database, once that is done I am going to delete everything

to be honest, any sort of vulnerability with WordPress would have been quickly exploited in the pre-AI days. just too big an attack surface.
#
[tantek]
I suspect it's gotten much worse in the past 3-6 months due to LLM/Agent based attacks. I suspect folks in #indieweb-wordpress are aware of this and working on it accordingly
#
wturrell
in WP's favour, they're very good at patching old versions – https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/wordpress-versions/ – and core patch updates are automatic (unlike Drupal…) and also you can still have updates working with sites that use version control.
#
[tantek]
perhaps WP folks are also using LLMs to find and fix their own vulns faster

Has anyone in the IndieWeb already experimented with a federated search engine or a standard for one?

friendly reminder jak2k, doesnm, would you mind moving this more technical conversation (federated, YaCy) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!

For my edu106 class this semester we were going to use GitHub pages, using the indieweb template from [kevinmarks] and learn HTML through Codex, but now the new "Sites" experiment launched in ChatGPT and we are tying that out to build pages: https://edu106-new-literacies.cyberdi-7246.chatgpt.site/
