lesleylai The barrier to having a website is much higher than having a social media account for "normal" non-technical people, so I don't know how this can change. To have a personal website, you need to 1. buy a domain and set up DNS, 2. setup the website hosting somehow. Both are not easy for "ordinary people" (who very likely use their phone all day now and don't even touch a computer)

WinnerWind there are no registrar website providers like Neocities and there are even providers that let you make a 'website' without any technical knowledge of making a site like Carrd. It's just that that is still 5x more friction than just making a facebook account

[snarfed] these difficulties are true historically, but not so much nowadays. modern hosts like http://micro.blog, http://wordpress.com, and afak squarespace and wix all have very smooth, optimized onboarding, where choosing a domain name is as easy as choosing a username, and fully automate away DNS (via domain registrar APIs) so you don't have to know anything about it
