Hey guys, I'm working on implementing my official "collections" in Jekyll prior to setting up my micropub endpoint integration. I've been reading up on the Wiki about Post types. Seems like the goal is "as much as possible" to minimize post types and rely on note with attributes as much as possible. My main thought is to have a note also be able to convert to (Reply, Photo, Video or Checkin) depending on the attributes added to the content type.
#
[eddie]
that note doesn't have a Title. So if I have an Article with a photo, it will still be an Article type, not a Photo type. This means my collection/post types would be: Note (with other types), Article, Read, Watch, Listen, Event and Meta.
#
[eddie]
Meta is: repost, like, and mood
#
[eddie]
So that'll be one type that changes based on attributes. Not sure if I should just merge Meta and Note.
#
GWG
[eddie]: Have you ever looked at post type discovery?
#
[eddie]
I've read some of it on Indieweb and an old blog post by aaronpk
#
[eddie]
But i definitely might have missed some stuff
#
[eddie]
I read about post-type discovery on this page: https://indieweb.org/posts
#
GWG
The idea is basically that you don't strongly type your entries...you derive the type from the properties

#
[eddie]
Okay, that's the general direction I was thinking with the Note -> Reply, Photo, Video, Checkin. Is it generally accepted practice to have that expand wider than that?
miklb joined the channel
#
[eddie]
I could see the Article and Meta merging into the same thing. I think my Read/Watch/Listen might be a little complicated to merge into the auto-discovery type workflow as I think there's going to be a lot of attributes going on with them
mblaney joined the channel
#
GWG
[eddie]: The recommended practice is to add types over time as you need/use them.
#
GWG
Of course, I don't listen, but I have other limitations to work under. I'm the one who maintains the WordPress plugin that handles Indieweb post types. So I have to work within their structure.
#
[eddie]
I think that's a good direction. Thinking through that more, I'm wondering if I could boil it down to Note and Media/Action. Media/Action for my brainstorming with the Read/Watch/Listen type, and then the Note would be able to transform into Reply, Photo, Video, Checkin, Repost, Like, Mood, Article based on attributes/discovery. That does narrow it down quite a bit
#
[eddie]
Thanks for talking it through, GWG :)
#
GWG
[eddie]: Any time. Been there
#
[eddie]
Anyone else who stumbles across this tonight/tomorrow, feel free to voice your thoughts. Trying to learn from your all's wisdom
#
KevinMarks
There is the spec tantek is working on
#
KevinMarks
What are post types
#
Loqi
Post or posts may refer to individual pieces of content published on an indieweb site such as notes, articles, & responses, or the act of creating the aforementioned content (present tense), or Posts about the IndieWeb https://indieweb.org/Post_Types
#
GWG
KevinMarks: That is what I was referring to when I said Post Type discovery
#
KevinMarks
Is the more formal spec
#
GWG
My thinking has evolved in that.
#
GWG
I need more strict typing because of what I'm doing, but I'm trying to loosen it in some areas.
#
[eddie]
Awesome, I'll read those. Thanks!

#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "on the edge" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
sebsel
well, I only show the first 50 words of a repost.
#
sebsel
is that a repost or a quote?
#
tantek
that's interesting. I'm not sure that's a full repost then
#
tantek
yeah that sounds more like a quotation
#
tantek
I think I wrote that one up
#
sebsel
To quote what I just wrote on the wiki: "{{sebsel}} displays only the first 50 words of a [[repost]], making retweets full reposts, but articles more like quotations. Since it's always the first 50 words, not a particular interesting part of the post, he still considers this reposting. He points at the whole post, and only quotes to keep copyright
#
sebsel
holders happy."
#
sebsel
I don't know, maybe it's easier to just delete my repost of an article, and have reposts only as retweets.
#
aaronpk
i don't think i would feel comfortable reposting an entire article
#
sebsel
I don't want to start yet another post-type. I have too many already
#
aaronpk
but i do like posting snippets from articles as bookmarks
#
sebsel
aaronpk that's my point
#
sebsel
Maybe I should make it a bookmark then.
#
aaronpk
right now my software supports reposting an article, but i have never done that and don't plan to. the closest thing was reposting martymcguire's podcast
#
sebsel
my motivations at that time where that I wanted the article to be visible, even when his server would go down.
#
sebsel
I thought that was a valid reason to repost
#
aaronpk
interesting yeah
#
sebsel
but now it only gives trouble.
#
sebsel
not that he noticed my reposting, but it has me thinking about my reposts.
#
aaronpk
maybe that use case is just something else and should be thought of separately than a repost
#
sebsel
yeah, more a seblog.nl/temp/etc
#
aaronpk
// TODO: implement this flowchart for webmention notifications https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1000/0*PV_09olld6K1l8jQ.
#
tantek
sebsel, what you're doing is more a quotation than a repost
#
sebsel
tantek yes, but... "The point of a quotation is to call out a specific subset, or emphasize one point or paragraph from someone else's post."
#
sebsel
And I don't, I want to point to the whole article.
#
tantek
I know, you're quoting my words :)
#
tantek
finds it hilarious when people quote his own words written on a wiki to debate a point with him :)
#
tantek
sebsel - in that case it's almost more like a bookmark
#
tantek
since you're not deliberately emphasizing that part of the post
#
tantek
your "first 50 words" is more like a bookmark-preview or a bookmark-context (similar in concept to /reply-context )
#
sebsel
quoting a wiki about quoting... It's getting confusing :)
#
sebsel
yes, I think that's what's happening here: at the time posting it, I thought it was good to make a complete copy of the post, so I reposted
#
sebsel
afterward, I felt uneasy about that, so now I should change it to just a bookmark.
#
sebsel
I think that solves all the problems I'm having here
#
tantek
cool, I'll add that then - thanks for the interesting example!
#
sebsel
(lol, changing this turns out as easy as just replace 'Repost-of: http..' with 'Bookmark-of: http..' in the .txt file of my post :) the display just changes in what I want)

tantek
what is a bookmark
#
Loqi
A bookmark (or linkblog) is a post that is primarily comprised of a URL, often title text from that URL, sometimes optional text describing, tagging, or quoting from its contents https://indieweb.org/bookmark
#
tantek
so now add yourself there
#
sebsel

#

So when you repost something (via MicroPub), what should grab the text/excerpt? The MP client, MP endpoint server, or site server?
#
aaronpk
right now i believe most people have done that on their server
#
aaronpk
clients just send the URL
#
aaronpk
i could imagine clients posting an h-cite object as the repost-of value, but that isn't how it's happened in practice yet
#
[keithjgrant]
Just makes it interesting for static sites, I guess
#
[keithjgrant]
(though I do have mine automatically embedding tweets via JS)
#
bear
i've always been a fan of the site doing all requests that way it's the only IP address that is exposed
#
aaronpk
interesting point
#
aaronpk
if my client fetched the post content, then it would be potentially "leaking" which client I use, which may not be desirable
