I’m on a Cloud Computer so I had to run some command line tools but it was pretty easy ?

aaronpk: the command to backup the wiki via rsync asks for authentication
#
aaronpk
orly...it shouldn't do that
#
sknebel
wget works with the changed domain, but is of course slow as molasses, since an update of course has to check each page for updates, get a 304, wait a second, ... not really an issue for something in a cron job though ;)
#
aaronpk
oops haha

#
sknebel
2h15min, updating an existing mirror is not noticably faster
#
aaronpk
i'm sure the wget one is way more intensive for the server too

6500 files, ~1s per file

I'll set up a cronjob for the rsync one

next question is: "what would I do with said backup if we had to recover from it"... probably set up mediawiki and feed it the text files via the API?
#
aaronpk
yeah that would work
#
aaronpk
the text files contain mediawiki source rather than the HTML you see on the web page
#
tantek
what about history?
#
tantek
(if recovery is the goal)
#
aaronpk
at that point i should just provide a mediawiki DB backup
#
tantek
(different from just showing a mirror, e.g. temporary)
#
tantek
makes sense
#
tantek
which should be 100% portable no matter where it would be served from since usernames are domains.
#
aaronpk
the good news is since everyone logs in via indieauth, there are no passwords to worry about leaking
#
tantek
and that too
#
aaronpk
there's nothing secret in the database
#
tantek
ironically, our wiki uses better "federated identity" than Mastodon / anything Webfinger-based etc. in that regard
#
tantek
Perhaps that's one of the keys to creating a federated identity system. Don't. Re-use an existing one.
#
tantek
And anyone attempting to create a *good* new one will basically have to do at least as good as DNS and all the tech & policies involved there.

aaronpk, that reminds me - how many "users" (logins from unique domains) does IndieWeb.org have now? Any way of telling how many we had as of 2016-12-31?
#
aaronpk
let's see if i have dates on her
#
aaronpk
cool, looks like i can tell how many new people were added each year
#
tantek
oh nice!
#
tantek
what are users?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "users" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
tantek
maybe we can keep an easily referenceable summary

^^^ that document could use a cleanup/filter in general -> would it be ok to create a "resolved" section at the bottom and move subsections there? (aaronpk? that's your "turf" ;))

yeah that sounds like a good idea, go for it

aaronpk: you might want to expand that note or the extensions page with some words on formal things -> presumably something like new query features would at the current point not be a change to the micropub spec, but written as an extension document (and if formally published, as a note?)?
#
sknebel
not sure what the process is/what you want the process to be
#
sknebel
and it would be great if you could have a look at https://indieweb.org/Micropub-brainstorming#Token_Verification_Endpoint -> I didn't find what you meant with the stub section, and it's not clear from /obtaining-an-access-token either if a token endpoint is supposed to do this or not (only see the authorization endpoint confirming the auth code)

!tell aaronpk: what's the difference between an itinerary on your site versus a p3k-trip? Is it past versus present? Mode of transport? Something else?

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
