so what loqi is telling me is I really need to add direct support for IndieAuth into Authl sooner rather than later

i had a custom uBlock snippet to suppress some of the junk on the Twitter website. New Twitter has landed for me. Does anyone have any uBlock rules to suppress the trending topics or other junk?
#
skippy
oh, look, uBlock makes it easy to select an element to block. TIL!

After accidentally deleting all of my photos from my site (oops) I am thinking about moving them to a cdn or something. Anyone got any recommendations apart from S3 that are good for a lot of files that are not viewed very often?
#
petermolnar
backblaze
#
skippy
[grantcodes]: Digital Ocean Spaces.
#
petermolnar
although you have to define "lot"
#
[grantcodes]
like 6gb at the moment
#
petermolnar
that's within free tier at a lot of places
#
[grantcodes]
5.65 GB, 6,411 Files, 286 Folders
#
petermolnar
looks at his wife's 360GB raw archive + 700GB JPEG
#
[grantcodes]
Majority of those are resized images
#
[grantcodes]
Heh, I still have a bunch to upload, and have the originals in dropbox. But nowhere near that many 😛
#
petermolnar
oh, that's just hers, mine is less though
#
petermolnar
so, you want backup, cdn, both, backup + sometimes share, all?
#
[grantcodes]
Purely for my website, so all public. CDN would be cool, but don't really need this to be the fastest thing in the world

Also need an api or something to upload the images from my media endpoint. Which I think rules out hetzner, although I'm sure I could set up something on it

In restoring that stuff I also found out I have 8738 watch posts, which seems like fat too many 😅
#
@zittrain
It turns out a lot of private data ends up in a URL. Long, un-guessable URLs are ways of referring to private Google Drive or OneDrive docs. They contain record locators and passenger names for airline flights. And those extensions read it all and pass it along. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_xGJZfXYAEFEg6.jpg

Unguessable URL does not mean put actual info into the URL
#
[eddie]
When I get them into my caching database properly, I'll have to count
#
aaronpk
pretty sure the W3C spec on capability URLs talks about this
#
petermolnar
"api or something to upload the images from my media endpoint" - sftp :P
#
petermolnar
system("scp $from server:/path/$to") ;)
#
[grantcodes]
My watch number is definitely off for some reason. Must be a lot of duplication. trakt.tv has it at 4917 over about 8 years. So around 1.6 watches a day which sounds better 😛
#
[grantcodes]
Well I'll look into the media storage options thanks petermolnar & skippy
#
[grantcodes]
I plan on abstracting it a bit in postr so that plugins can handle storage.
#
skippy
rsync
#
skippy
https://www.pcloud.com/ 10G free [grantcodes]
#
skippy
and https://rclone.org/ is another tool to explore for syncing
#
[grantcodes]
Yeah I've use rsync and rclone just for moving stuff around one time. I don't really fancy setting up and maintaining software on a solely media machine though

I've been thinking I may chuck my media (for Micropub) into a /Netlify -served Git repo, which gives me free hosting for quite a lot of bandwidth for source controlled changes

!tell gRegorLove made some progress on my ideas for an IndieWeb 101 lesson: https://buildyourfirstwebsitelessonplans.glitch.me/
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
jgmac1106
if anyone has any free time I would love feedback on the lessons here as well: https://buildyourfirstwebsitelessonplans.glitch.me/ I moved the h-card out for now and wiill introduce in fourth lesson
#
jgmac1106
after watching people get started they will often break microformats as they just start playing in HTML and then you get in the rabbit hole of explaining both and folks wanting to IndieWeb correctly.
#
jgmac1106
figure better to get the HTML proper and then add the metadata as a way to reduce jargon and cogntive load on new learners
#
[grantcodes]
I'm surprised prettier still isn't built into the glitch editor by default to be honest
#
[grantcodes]
But now that the vscode plugin exists you can get a much more serious dev environment

thanks will give the first 4-5 lessons a spin this summer and hopefully full thing in the fall,

agree grantcodes i pull everything back into a text editor for spellcheck and for prettify

I think the description of h1,h2 etc. tags could be a bit clearer. "By default the headers are bigger than each other" << Could be more specific and specify that H1 is the largest, and H6 the smallest by default
#
Loqi
Sorry, I couldn't find a page named "I think the description of h1,h2 etc. tags could be a bit clearer. "By default the headers are bigger than each other"" or similar
#
jgmac1106
good idea

I'll keep an eye on your lessons! Maybe I can incorporate them if I teach interaction design again next spring

there's also Wasabi - S3-adajacent API and way cheaper with a high SLA

Seconding Backblaze from above - B2 is way cheaper than S3
#
[fluffy]
I dunno how it compares to Wasabi though
[KevinMarks], gRegorLove, gRegorLove_, [schmarty] and [grantcodes] joined the channel
#
[grantcodes]
I did a comparison for my usage and it ranged from about $1 to a whopping $5 per year!
#
[grantcodes]
But B2 looks like it has a nice node module so I think I might give that a go
[snarfed] joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
[grantcodes] has a good point. for most of us with personal web site data volumes, the cost difference between s3, backblaze, wasabi, etc will be negligible/meaningless compared to the time investments, ecosystem, tools, etc
#
[grantcodes]
Yeah having looked at it just a little my main decision factor is ease of use within my workflow
#
[snarfed]
too easy to overvalue money and undervalue time and effort
#
[grantcodes]
But a fair number of services I saw had a free tier and then bumped up to a crazy price for my basic use case so you still need to be careful

Whenever I look into object storage it’s with the intention of serving up large video files and moderately-large audio files. I wouldn’t bother with object storage for just images, when static self-hosting is just fine for that.
#
[fluffy]
If I were to look into an image CDN I’d want one which also supports cutting thumbnails/renditions via API, and I haven’t looked into whether that’s even an option on any of them. At Amazon I was vaguely involved in a project to add that to S3 but I don’t know if that ever got anywhere.
